Hi there...cats not only have tails to provide balance, but also is used as a rudder to help them manuever turns quickly when sprinting at high speeds and as to communicate emotions as well. Here's a chart which shows the different meanings the tail can communicate: http://messybeast.com/images/cat-chat3.png

Balance. Those with tails survived better than those without, because they can jump from higher and land on their feet, and they can walk on narrow ledges, all because of good balance. A cat whose tail has been lost to accident or illness will stay low to the ground and hide under things, instead of on top of things, the way one with a tail avoids confrontations.

But remember, cats are not only prey for larger animals, they are themselves preditors. Being able to jump down from a height onto an unsuspecting ground-dweller is a major advantage, too. Whenever you hear of a wildcat's attack, it is almost always a jump from a tree or overhanging rock. Could not do that with confidence without a tail for balance.

They have nerve endings on the tip that are very sensitive and cats actually have 3 sets of whiskers not just one. They are little walking antennae, very sensitive to motion and vibration and it also helps with balance like everyone else said.

All Siamese and Egyptian cats like the Abyssinian have a kink in there tail where the Pharaohs and or queens in thailand and other parts of Asia used to keep there rings... That is true I have heard that before too.

the tail is used for balance, but some cats that have stubs for tails or no tails at all have just as good balance as cats with tails, so there could be other reasons, such as to keep warm during sleep.
