Thinking of changing religions?

Question

My parents raised me to make my own choices concerning my spiritual path....and I have been looking for some time now for a religion that shares my particular view points. I stumbled across a book about wicca in the ladies room at work and began to read it. I have since returned the book and purchased some of my own....my question.... is there anyone in this section who has switched from christian to wiccan and how did you deal with your feelings during the switch and know it was the right religion for you? I was baptist before and they kinda brainwash you away from all other religions and I don't know any one to teach me the "old" ways or to explain how they apply the religion to thier day to day lives. If you know any websites or places for good info (not interested in black magick or evil type worship) please let me know. Thanks!

Wow, having read these answers I wonder why so many people even bother asking legitimate questions anymore.

And, I'm disappointed to see the atheists chime in with this. I had actually never seen them be so disrespectful of someone's religious choice this way before.

I was a christian for 20 years, then studied Messianic Judaism and then Judaism. I finally came upon Wicca and Paganism. I tried Wicca, and found a path that gave me peace. After some study, I moved on to a Celtic Pagan belief

I think for me, the biggest thing was realizing that Jesus most likely never even existed as a human being.. that was a very difficult epiphany, as I was a very devoted believer.

I know that you have probably gone through the process of dealing with the 'brainwashing' that Wicca is of Satan, etc...
I can assure you, most former christians dealt with those feelings as well.

My suggestion for you is to begin at the library and see what they have available there. Some fantastic books for beginning your path in Wicca are:

Wicca for the Solitary Practioner by Scott Cunningham
The Power of the Witch by Laurie Cabot
Witchcraft: Theory and Practice by Ly De Angeles

I was Christian until about 6 years ago. I had been interested in Witchcraft at an early age, 13, but due to the brainwashing I had received was scared to go forward and learn. This was in 1979 also so there was less real information around. Since I have chosen this path, or it has chosen me, I have been more happy than ever. It is an eye opening path. I was very angry with the Christian religion the first few years because I learned what a bunch of hog wash it is and how it was used to suppress women and gain power over them.

If this is your true path you will know it. My advice is to go to www.witchvox.com and do some research. Lots of links and interesting info there.

Just in case this is not a joke-and you are really serious (which I doubt), I would suggest you try to understand what part about being baptist you did not understand. It is obvious that your 'baptist' did not take. Have you ever heard the term 'born again'? That is the most criticle part about being baptist. If you were born again your interest would be somewhere else, not in wicca. I think you just missed the whole point of "Christian". Go back to you baptist church and ask your pastor why you are interested in wicca. If he can not tell you-then you are in the wrong church. Being baptist is 'not" where its at, being born again is-that all that counts.

Witchvox's website... great resource. I was once Wiccan from Catholicism... BUT it was a transformation that wasn't one riddled with "guilt" in the process because I lost "faith" in the "Big 3" religions in increments as I delved into science, logic and philosophy as I grew older and began to gain wisdom about how the REAL world works as opposed to what I was being told from the pulpit. It's HARD to feel guilty about TRUTH and if it's dinging you right in the kisser that something isn't making sense. Educate yourself and make up your own mind, nobody else can influence it if you don't let them... your mind is your own.

I was raised Christian and went pretty far off the path in my teens. I did Wicca for a while and then went over to Judaism with much sincerity. I came very very close to converting and spent several years studying Judaism. Recently I've come back to Christ. Ultimately I realized that Christianity has so many important things to say about the world and the human condition. The deeper you dig the more truth you find. And we don't exist in a vacuum. Our family histories and who we are is deeply rooted in our religious heritage. Look deeply into Christianity--even if it's in another denomination--and you'll find what you need.

i was raised christian and am now wiccan. for me it was a more natural progression, because i read about older pagan style religions in books and things and realised it was more in line with my beliefs before i knew it was a legitimate religion. but yeah - it just all makes sense to me and things, so it is what i believe.

just search for wicca etc, and you will find some good net sites i think. good luck.

That is exactly what is wrong with this world today, self seeking people. Why seek another spiritual path, why don't you be like others who have started their own religions based on their particular view points. why waste your time...How easy is it to believe or follow something that tells you what you think and believe is right. I think alot of people don't want to believe in God/Jesus or the Bible b/c they hold us to standards that alot of people just don't want to live up to, don't even want to try b/c they want to do things their way, b/c it feels good to them. Whatever you choose, one day you are going to have to give account for your choices so choose wisely.

wicca is a common, though frowned upon by christianity, nature- based religion, it is just as valid for it's believers as any other religion is for it's believers.
while i don't know of any practicioners, or even sites, you'llfind them using a simple search on the net. you may even find one near you. they tend to have only a few members in each group, but they really are intersted in what they do, and believe. don't let others tell you what is good and bad, they are just as ignorant of the real truth as the rest of us.

you are "thinking" about changing religions...

this is something that is more natural than chosen. you don't just decide that you are going to be a Catholic today and a Buddhist tomorrow. it doesn't work that way. you need to analyze why you are thinking about changing religions & what makes you so attracted to one over another. it is more about the core of the belief rather than the whole....

the best thing to do is to do a lot of research & reading on religion. i encourage you to learn about as many religions as you can before you make your decision. it is good that you are questioning your beliefs. that is what you are supposed to do. just make sure you aren't doing it out of rebellion. that is normal, but not necessarily healthy. also, your beliefs might be more non-denominational rather than Methodist or Baptist. research your options, dear.

i just abandoned the "labels" and decided to follow the God of the Bible without all the titles...

Now that you've figured out that you can think for yourself, and that you were brainwashed into baptist christianity- isn't it about time that you applied your rational brain to the issue and become an atheist.

There are other ways to pursue your spiritual side.
