Most of them used a slow smoldering wick or small torch on an extension like handle. It was not as precise as today.

Firework is an antique art, which was practised in China thousands of years BC. Marco Polo took it to Europe and since then there is always been fireworks (for reference, Handel wrote music for royal fireworks)
That's what they did before 1900.
