And what did that person do to deserve that position and that title?

I don't see any place in the Bible where Peter was given the title of POPE.

In 95 AD The apostle John finished writing Revelation, and completed the Bible. Right after that, the Bible was published as one Book of 66 books in Latin. This resulted in Intense persecution against Christianity by the Roman Empire for over 200 years. Finally in 313 AD The Roman Emperor CONSTANTINE gave in, and organised a central state-church in Rome with him at the head. This became known at the ROMAN CATHOLIC Church. And CONSTANTINE became the first POPE. Before that time, all "churches" were local and independent and were also illegal.

"Pope" literally means "papa". According to the Catholic Encyclopedia, "Pope. The most noteworthy of the titles are Papa, Summus Pontifex, Pontifex Maximus, Servus servorum Dei. The title pope (papa) was, as has been stated, at one time employed with far more latitude. In the East it has always been used to designate simple priests. In the Western Church, however, it seems from the beginning to have been restricted to bishops (Tertullian, 'De Pud.' 13). It was apparently in the fourth century that it began to become a distinctive title of the Roman Pontiff. Pope Siricius (d. 398) seems so to use it (Ep. vi in P. L., XIII, 1164), and Ennodius of Pavia (d. 473) employs it still more clearly in this sense in a letter to Pope Symmachus (P. L., LXIII, 69). Yet as late as the seventh century St. Gall (d. 640) addresses Desiderius of Cahors as papa (P. L., LXXXVII, 265). Gregory VII finally prescribed that it should be confined to the successors of Peter."

St. Peter was, without any doubt, the first pope.

Protestants, who mistakenly think the Bibe is a complete record of all significant Christian events and history, are dismayed that more is not included about this in scripture, so they make things up to suit their own predilections.

St. Peter was selected for that job by God the Father, and by Jesus Christ, personally. The details of that event ARE recorded in scripture.

To find out what St. Peter did to deserve that position, you really should ask God, not Yahoo.

Even the Catholic church with its vast archives and the Vatican library. Has no record of who the first pope was. They claim it was Peter. A check of both secular and Biblical history reports no evidence that Peter was ever in Rome. If he was he would have used his power to have Paul released from prison.

One Damasus in 382AD, was the first to claim supreme spiritual authority. He was granted this title by the reigning emperor. He emerged with this after an 18 year battle with his rivals. During this time there were several persons competing for this prize.

History verifies this, at one time a woman pope. By the name of Joan. She became pregnant, and gave birth to a child during a papal procession, and promptly died afterwards.

To try and cover this up, the powers that be in the Vatican, simply changed her name to Zachary.

simon magus who called himself Simon Peter and who, if you check was the founder of the false religion spoken of in the Book of Revelations. This man is not to be confused with Simon Peter, the Apostle of Jesus Christ.
He was a magician who used his power to dupe the people into thinking he was 'the one true god on earth' and created his own religion, priests etc. He wove lies with truth to make the people follow him. This be a true act of the devil, who would weave the truth into all lies to deceive those who would be swayed.
Read Revelations and Luke again.

Bishop Thomas was a bishop sent out by the Greek Orthodox church to rome in 870 AD. The Emperor was busy fighting some one or other so Thomas decided to create his own religion. He created the roman catholic religion and declared himself pope in 872 AD. And it has been down hill since then.

Although he was not called 'Pope,' Simon Peter was the first to fill that role.

John 21:15-17 states:

When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?" He said to him, "Yes, Lord, you know that I love you." He said to him, "Feed my lambs."

He then said to him a second time, "Simon, son of John, do you love me?" He said to him, "Yes, Lord, you know that I love you." He said to him, "Tend my sheep."

He said to him the third time, "Simon, son of John, do you love me?" Peter was distressed that he had said to him a third time, "Do you love me?" and he said to him, "Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you." (Jesus) said to him, "Feed my sheep.

Matthew 16:17-19 states:

Jesus said to him in reply, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah. For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father. And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven."

The Catholic Church believes the Lord made Simon alone, whom he named Peter, the "rock" of his Church. He gave him the keys of his Church and instituted him shepherd of the whole flock.

The Pope is the senior pastor of 1.1 billion Catholics, the direct successor of Simon Peter.

The English word Pope was not used until much later.
Pope:
from Middle English,
from Old English papa,
from Late Latin,
from Latin, father (title of bishops),
from Greek pappas
