I have no problem believing the ozone layer is being damaged and as a consequense the temperature may rise and ice will melt. But to say that ice melting will lead to earth being covered over seems like bad science to me. If you put half a glass of water in the freezer the next day you will have closer to a full glass of ice. If it melts and most of the icebergs are underwater, would that not result in lower sea levels? What am I missing here?

First, the depleted ozone is not the source of global warming. It's increases in carbon dioxide levels.

Second, the majority of the ice in the world sits on land in Greenland and Antartica. The sea ice at the North Pole will cause a drop in global sea levels, but this is greatly offset by the ice sitting on land.

Third, no intelligent person is saying the Earth will be covered in water. Only the coastal areas will be flooded, higher ground will remain dry. This is however, a serious problem since the world's economy relies almost entirely on shipping to function, and hundreds of millions of people live in coastal areas. If all the port cities are flooded, we're all in big trouble.

The Ice Caps of the Arctic and Antarctic are above sea level as well. The melting of the Ice Caps would send coastal areas underwater, but I don't believe it would happen all at once, like a flood, but gradually.

No. The water level would rise more than....i think it was 60 feet at the most, not sure though, so no it wouldn't flood the world.

All I know is that San Diego was at 16 degrees a couple of weeks ago--the lowest its ever really been. And here in Denver we've been pounded by 44 inches of snow in one week--with plenty more to come--which is near record even for us (we only normally get 60 a year and we're already at about that mark).

In other words, you're going to have a tough time selling Al Gore's "Inconvenient Truth" around here. We're not buying it.

We are promised never another flood. The way the earth will be destroyed the second time will be with fire. But basically Daver's answer is a good one.
