Don't just think it's the old cliche of not washing and stress; It could be what you're washing with. I used to get quite bad spots. I noticed it was due to the brand of cleanser I was using. My skin is highly sensitive and there's not much which doesn't bring me out in a flare-up; however, I've discovered the Boots own brand cleanser which is perfume-free works for me. For the record: I'm always stressed and I don't get spots. Also, I knew someone who suddenly started getting spots. I asked if she changed what she washed with; she said no. I asked if shampoo got on her face in the shower (another culprit). "Ah", she said. Apparently, she used to get her hair washed at the hairdressers, but she'd recently started washing it in the shower and the shampoo ran over her face. Diet can also make a difference.

Hormonal activity during puberty and young adulthood causes the oil glands to produce more oil. Dead skin cells clog the pores, and bacteria cause inflammation. Since there are more oil glands on the face, back and chest, these are the areas where acne often appears. Dirt does not cause acne, so don’t overwash your skin. Unfortunately, acne is also often an inherited condition.

The underlying cause of acne is increased production of androgen hormones and increased sensitivity of androgen receptors. Acne-like eruptions may be caused by some medicines. The most common age group affected by acne is the 14 to 19 age group, although people in their 20s and 30s may also have acne, and it can reappear at menopause.

It is mainly hormones, acne is suffered by teenagers, menopausal women, PMS and pregnant women etc.. It mainly affects people whose body is going through some sort of change. Stress is also a factor and it dose not help if you do not clean your face properly everyday. There is not a great deal you can do about it unfortunately. It has ruined the love life of teenagers from the beginning of time !

I'm not a dermatologist, but my son had it badly as a teenager, so I read up on it. It's not dirt, (although you should keep your skin clean) it's not diet (although improving your diet will help) The current thinking seems to be that it's an infection, exacerbated by the rush of testosterone you get as a teenager. My son finally got some tablets from his GP, which worked a treat, although you can't take them long term and the acne did return, but never so bad. I am sorry I can't remember the name of the tablets, but they are very strong and your GP may not prescribe them unless you have it really badly.

His skin cleared up in his late teens and he never gets acne now, so please remember that for most people, it's a temporary thing.

Oils on the skin, although stress certainly doesn't help the process, either. Consuming fatty, oily foods is the primary cause.
