I believe atheists try to prove religion wrong, and are so set in their beliefs that there is no higher power because deep down, they really do know that God exists, but they want to be in control of their own lives. If they believed in God, that would be admitting to and giving in to the fact that there is someone greater than they are who is really in control of their lives. I also believe that with how much everything in the Bible compares to and has been proven by everything today, it takes more faith to believe that there is no God than to believe that there is. How could this entire planet and everything that is on it have come from one little thing in outer space that blew up? And why is there no record of a monkey evolving into a man... Do they coincidentally evolve when no one is looking? And why has man never evolved into anything else? There is no way that everything here is a coincidence... man alone is so complex, and the fact that we begin as two little cells and become 100-500 pound beings who can move and talk and think, etc.
Our "proof" is faith and seeing the power of our prayers, and the peace that we have knowing that no matter what happens, in the end it will be ok. We may be critical, but we have a reason to.

There are a lot of loopholes and a lot of inconsistencies in Catholicism, and atheists like to challenge that. Honestly, if you are devoting your life to a religion, wouldn't you want to challenge some of the ambiguous ideas as well?
Many atheists don't understand why so many people devote themselves fully to something that is not 100%, but it is, above and beyond, a personal choice what you want to believe in.
The other issue is that often the Catholic church gets involved in political issues, which is something that many people feel strongly about - church and state should not go together. That is not to say that morality should not be taken into account when dealing with political issues, but many of the Catholic church's views impede on certain rights that do not apply to non-Catholics, for example, the legalization of birth control or the HPV issue.

I dont think its just atheists because I have known some atheists who live and let live and arent obsessed with destroying religion. It has more to do with a personality type that thinks whatever they think is the absolute truth and will not rest until everyone thinks exactly like they do. I've seen this personality type in religious people (different types of religions) and in atheists and also in politics. They are just self centered and obsessed.

We don't poke holes on any religion. Religions are full of holes, we just happen to notice and spread the word about them.
We can't prove god doesn't exist, because you can't prove anything in a negative sense. We need to discredit the proves you theists claim to have.
Dialog and controversy are the salt and pepper of life. It would be very boring if we'd just agree about everything.

Choosing a religion that declares itself to be the one and only true religion is the same as declaring all religions outside of your own to be false. In that way, you are an atheist to all gods but your own. I am not critical of religion for the pleasure of crushing other people's delusions, I see it as the necessary evolution of society, to end theism. To choose any particular religion is to be narrow-minded, as you have yet to experience all possibilities.

From what I've seen here is that way too many people just want to take stabs at each other without attempting to answer questions. It seems both sides are equaly closed minded. I never expect everyone to agree with me, but an honest answer is way better than just being spiteful.

So where did you get the "Catholics especially"?
Honestly I think many of the Catholic branch are a bit more relaxed and tolerant. At least from my experience and the friends that I have who are Catholics.
