Norton and McAffe are packed with extra crap that will hog resources. They need to check off all those squares on the back of the box so Office Max customers will choose it. Also they are the most popular, so many viruses look for them first and try to disable them.
My personal favorite: NOD32 http://www.eset.com/
AVG is a good free choice.

Norton is really good. If it slows down your computer then it's because real-time protection is enabled. This means to say that if you see a file, norton is scanning it simultaneously in the background. This is recommended. So, that slow down your comp...
Many anti-virus programs do the same. However, recommended programs are:
Mcafee - Awesome, and trusted.
AVG - Supposed to be really good. My friends use it.

AOL Virus Protection. All you need to download it is an AOL username and password (which is free and takes 2 minutes to make). Once you do that, you can download the Virus protection along with Spam control, Phishing blockers, etc.
I have had it for awhile and it hasn't slowed down my computer and blocks everything! :D

I use McAfee Internet Security and i have real time scanning, as i am constantly downloading reports and journals for my uni work. I have never noticed my computer slowing down. The Only time it slows down is when McAfee starts a full disk scan.

AVG from Grisoft is good, and there's a free version (not a trial). Get it at http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1
And if you want an anti-virus that can be used from most USB storage devices, including iPods and MP3 players, get ClamWin from http://portableapps.com/apps/utilities/clamwin_portable
