My friend is traveling from the U.S.A and she will be touring Germany, Lithuania, Poland, Russia, Sweden, Finland, and 2 or 3 other countries for the next 4 weeks. She is VERY nervous about forgetting something or doing something wrong.

ANY tips for international traveling would be WELL appreciated and I will pass it on to her!! What did you pack on your carry on? How did you pass the time on the plane? Is there something you didn't bring that you wish you would have? THANKS!!!!!!!!!

Have her dress "preppie." I don't know, the fashion for girls might be harder than guys. Generally, everyone in Europe seems to dress very sharp and the style is tight fitting vs. American baggy. Don't wear anything with American flags or with overly nationalistic slogans like, "America #1" or anything like that.

Have her learn a few simple words or phrases in German, Polish, Swedish, etc. like "hello", "thank you", "you're welcome", "please", "yes", "no", etc. People in other countries like it when you can interact with them in their own tongue, even at the most basic level.

Tell her to relax. If she can be well mannered, and she's friendly enough, she'll be fine, especially in the Western European countries she's visiting. Traveling should be fun, not a nerve- wracking experience. She's a foreigner and a tourist, so if she has a good attitude, people will forgive little mistakes.

I envy her. Wish I was back bumming around in Europe right now!

She's not travelling to Kenya. Europe is quite different than the United States but if she forgets something she can very easily buy whatever it is in Europe. All she needs is her passport and money. Other than that there's nothing to worry about. I always bring some food in case of delays at the airport. It's always fun to bring an AM/FM radio to listen to music in foreign languages. She definately will want to bring a language translator and phrase book when she's travelling in more rural areas. Most of this stuff is not necessary, though, and if forgotten can be purchased abroad.

There is one rule that always remains true for travel PACK LIGHT. You will be surprised to find that you can buy almost any product you need. In my carry on I packed a pair of slacks and a shirt and clean underware for a day' medicine if needed a pack of sklttles. and a camera and film. I was on a flight from N.Y. to the middleeast. My luggage was 2 bags. Worked out fine. Good Luck have a nice time wish I could go

Tell her to definatly pack a change of clothes and some of her toiletries in her carry on bag, just in case the airline looses her luggage. When traveling to other countries, it's a lot more likely to happen, because of the change in airlines and all that. When I went to Europe, they lost my luggage on the way there and on the way back! They usually have little tv's on the planes with a couple different movies playing on different channels. You could tell her to bring a book or an mp3 player to pass the time.

Before leaving:

Double check your passport / visa to be sure you have everything.
Recheck dept. of state warnings / advisories for each country.
Recharge your iPod and download updates.
Get travelers checks.
Notify your credit card company that you'll be traveling.

Carry on:
Passport
iPod
Printed copies of itineraries, confirmations, tickets, etc.
Travelers Checks
Credit Card
Change of Clothes
Electrical adaptors for destination countries
Travel-size (<3 oz each) mouthwash, toothbrush, deodorant
Snackwells cookies or crackers
Guide book
Novel or magazines (The latter is better, because you can throw them out when you arrive at your destination and buy more as required.)

Let me add one thing to Ketel's answer. Go find a good copy shop and make a color copy of your photo page of your passport. Have it reduced to credit card size and laminated. If you have a visa for a specific country(ies) do the same with them too. This will take up much less space in your wallet than full size photocopies and you can keep your passport in your hotel safe. This is also good to have in case your passport is lost or stolen.
