Because people don't even know about their own religion and can't think for themselves. They only blindly follow what they are taught. I think if you're truly religious then you wouldn't fight at all. It's ridiculous. Humans want power and control. We want to be right meaning someone has to be wrong. We want to fight and to win.

If you believe something to be right, then things that contradict what you believe to be "right", you must believe they are "wrong". No matter what the subject.

If you don't believe anything is "right", then you have no beliefs at all.

Examples:
A person who believes evolution is "right", must believe the 6 days of creation described in the Bible is wrong.

A person who believes there is no God, must believe that all the people who say there is a God are wrong.

Everyone has a belief. Yes, everyone has some things they believe to be right, true, and correct. By accepting these things, these people automatically state that the things contrary to this view are not right, false and incorrect.

Christians believe the God of the Bible is what he claims to be, the only true and living God. This being said, we believe any other "god" is not-true and non-living. If we don't reject the opposite of our view, then we don't truly believe what we claim to affirm.

If you believe to be saved, you must follow a certain way, and others you see do not travel that same path, then you only have a few choices. You can decide you don't care that they are lost and leave them alone. You can decide that there is not just one way to be saved, weakening your own set of beliefs, or you can engage them in discussion hoping to convince them of what you see to be the truth, and thereby saving their soul. The more soundly you believe your doctrine is right, the more you will be willing to dogmatically stand by it and the more urgency you will place upon convincing others to join your beliefs.

If you love and care about them, you must try to come to a point where you believe they are saved also.

An appropriate word for that is not accepting but rather allowing each to exist and also not to insist on which one is right.

Because people are petty and ridiculous. I've had people turn down my offer for free ice cream after Youth Group because I was a "known atheist". Sure, I don't believe in God, but if I didn't like Christians, I wouldn't have gone to Youth Group, and I certainly wouldn't have offered to buy them ice cream.

Good idea. Hopefully your idea will be taken to heart by the atheists on this board who are incredibly intolerant of the beliefs of others -- you know, the atheists who call Christians "stupid" and "brainwashed" and what not.

Some atheists are the most intolerant people on earth. They, more than anyone, need to warm up to the concept of accepting others' religious beliefs.

I can't respect any religion that tells its followers that theirs is the only universal truth, and that encourages persecution and harassment of non-believers.

Voting for candidates who support a gay marriage ban and other laws based solely on what the bible (or koran, or whatever religious text you follow) says is persecution, and evangelism is harassment.

I think a lot of Christians don't accept other religions because they believe they are saving non believers from hell. So in their mind, if they badger you, they are actually helping you.
