I usaually do one of 2 things.
1st I lay them down and read a story then I say ok mommy is going to check on you when she gets home. Why don't we make a game out of it and see who can fall asleep first. You pretend to sleep and the child will nood off.
2nd I somtimes will let them sleep on the couch till the parent gets home. I put on a really boring TV program and then they are out in like 10 mins. Try it with some warm milk.

You can sing him a song, or have a little chat in the bed with his favorite toy. He will get asleep soon. Don't leave him crying because this will get things worse.

You have to be very patient with him. Talk to him and/or sing a song is best, because while talking and/or while singing together he can "forget" a little bit about his mom and can feel not "so alone". And be with him until he get to sleep! It is important that he doesn't feel alone.

Hope this helps!!

Comfort him.

It's frustrating, but he isn't doing anything wrong. He is probably scared, even if he knows you, confused, misses his mom, and doesn't get why he isn't with her, even if he was told. Try not to get mad at him if he keeps crying.

If he'll let you, hold him and rock him. Read him a story or lay with him until he falls asleep. If his mom has a cell phone, maybe you can call it so he can tell her good night and calm down a little bit.

Call his mom and find out if it's ok to go into her room and get a shirt of hers that he can sleep in. Tell him it will be like his mom is wrapped all around him for the night. Good luck.

Sit next to him on the couch, tell him you'll read him 1 story than he has to lay down on the couch. Do that, then let him lay down and watch a children's movie, when he falls asleep pick him up & put him into bed.

Tell him his mom will be home once he wakes up, and the quickest way to get her home is to go to bed.

Its not unusual for a child that age to cry and carry on, he'll use his mom being gone as leverage to avoid sleeping.

Pat his back for a while, read him a book, and then just leave him in there. If he comes out fourteen times crying, dont worry, its not as bad as he's making it out to be. Reassure him that falling asleep is the quickest way for him to see his mom. And that she really will be home, and put him back to bed.

Theyre mostly crocodile tears, and compounded by his sleepiness, and the emotional snow ball effect :)

You'll survive.

Hold him for a while. Hold him and walk around and rub his back. Eventually he will calm down. When he does, lay him in his bed and rub his back some more. He will eventually fall asleep. He just needs to get it all out and relax....

Holding him and rubbing his back and saying something like "its okay" in a calm soothing voice will let him know that he is okay. Maybe thats all he needs.

He must not know you and would suggest that give him his favorite snack .. watch some tv and read him his favorite story.. Just talk to him and say mom will be home after he goes to sleep. He must of not been away from mom and assure him she is just out for the night and she will be hom soon.

If you can get him to lie down on his bed or on the sofa, sit beside him and ask him to tell you a story about his mom. This will help him calm down and hopefully, as he tells the story he will start feeling sleepy and will gradually nod off. It's worked for me before. Good luck, and remember, it's important for you to stay nice and calm.
