The first light was a light that separated darkness and light, but the second light was, as you'll notice in verse 16 two lights, a greater light (the sun) and a lesser light (the moon and stars).
The first light was light, but the evening was darkness.
Just imagine the sky with no stars or moon. We would be in total pitch darkness without our man made lights. Possibly an awful darkness that's talked about in Exodus, so dark that you could even feel it.
Gen 1:3-5 3 Then God said, "Let there be light"; and there was light. 4 And God saw the light, that it was good; and God divided the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light Day, and the darkness He called Night. So the evening and the morning were the first day.
Here we see that God first created light at the beginning of His creation of the heavens and the earth.
God took a mass of emptiness and confusion, and out of that mass He created the light to remove the emptiness and confusion.
This is the same thing He does with us.
When you were (are maybe still are) searching for the truth you were like a mass of confusion, empty inside.
Then God opened your eyes to the light, His son Jesus Christ. Then all of a sudden, no more emptiness or confusion. Why, because Jesus is the light of the world. And He fills that darkness and emptiness inside you.
Jesus said:
· John 8:12 Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, "I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life."

An even better question is why are there 2 creation stories in Genesis? Genesis 1:26 Let US make man in OUR image, according to OUR likeness. 1:27 male & female he created them.
Genesis 2:7 God proceeded to form man out of the dust and blow ththe breath of life into his nostril. 2:15 He formed Eve from the rib of Adam.
Then later in after Cain killed Abel he went to the land of Nod and married a woman from the other people? Where did THEY come from? At that time Adam and Eve had only had the 2 boys.

the light on the first day was understanding and wisdom. not a literal light. this had to be there before God created everything. light and darkness do not mix. satan was cast down to earth before the creation spoken of in genesis. (satan was the darnkess, i.e. dark prince. Before God could create man to live on earth this was necessary. also, please realize that when God "created" and when God "made" are two different occurences. we are made in God's image. the Bible says "as a man thinketh that is what he is". whatever we think we are creating our world in those thoughts. when it manifests in reality is becomes made. that the difference in what God did in chap 1 and 2 in Genesis.

Which sun do you speak of? You know, there are millions if not billions in the Universe, in every galaxy. Not to mention the ones we cannot see that look like a 20 watt lightbulb even through our most complex telescopes and observatory stations. God is All that is, so the "light" radiated from the essence of God, the consciouness of God.

i think on the fourth day the suns light could be seen on earth before it could only be seen from the heavens.this wasnt a literal 24 hour day

As a Christian who has taken the time to study in-depth the historical context of the Genesis creation story, I understand that its writing was not a literal explanation of God's creation. It was more about contrasting the multiple pagan gods of Babylon against the Hebrew belief in the one God of Israel, Yahweh. Near-Eastern culture taught metophorically because it was primarily an illiterate society. Genesis was a story that offered the Jews hope of deliverance from Babylonian slavery and oppression. To align Genesis with the literal order of creation and apply a specific science methodology from it is to entirely miss the point of Genesis.

Actually it was the sun, but understand the earth was cooling, hence letting the sunlight filter through. And after three days, the sun shined down on the earth. (It is something of that manner, so to speak.)

I just want to point out that the girl whose name starts with "bballsist..." said that the moon makes light and suggested about the stars (that are suns) into question about how light happens without the sun. This is the brain of your average christian.
