Bound's hubby here:

It seems we have a major case of confusion here!

With respect to rifles and cartridges, you are at least focused on American military rifles and ammo, but your are a bit confused!

The M1 Rifle, called the Garand, fires the .30M1 rounds, also known as the .30-'06. The G.I. M1 Garand was manufactured by: Springfield Armory (military facility), International Harvester, Winchester, and Harrington Richardson.

The M14 Rifle (civilian version called the M1A), fires the 7.62mm NATO round, also known as the .308 Winchester. The M14 was manufactured by Winchester and TRW. The commercial M1A is manufactured by Springfield Armory (civilian manufacturer).

The M1 Carbine, fires the .30M1 Carbine round, also known as the .30 Carbine. The military versions of the M1 Carbine have been made by: Saginaw Steering, Rock-ola, Inland Machine, Union Switch & Signal, Winchester, Quality, and a few other manufacturers. The civilian versions of the M1 Carbine have been made by: Plainfield Machine, Iver Johnson, Universal, and I believe Thompson-Auto Ordinance, perhaps even more.

If your wife bought a M1 Carbine, I seriously doubt it was made by Springfield Armory. I am not aware of Springfield Armory (military or civilian) having made the carbine. A good indicator would be to look at the detachable box magazine. If the magazine is about 2" long (front to back) you have an M1 Carbine that fires the .30 Carbine cartridge. If the detachable box magazine is about 3.25" long (front to back), you have an M1A, and it fires the .308 Winchester cartridge.

The .30-06 is about 1/2" longer than the .308 and would prove disasterous if fired in a .308.

You can get 12 ga. flares to be fired in a 12 ga. shotgun. However, the signal flares you find at most marine supply centers are designed to be fired in a flare gun ... there is a major difference!

Good luck!

I'm sorry to say that if you don't know what caliber your gun is you should not be throwing bullets into it. There is a big diffrence between the 30-06 and the .308. Chances are your gun is a .308 that is what most of them are now days. And I doubt you would want to shoot a flare out of a 12ga shot gun, that is why they make a flare gun...so that you do not shot a flare out of anything else. But all and all the m1 is a fantastic gun and will bring hours of enjoyment, once you read a owners manual have fun.

If you have the M1 Grand and it does not chamber a 30-06 the rifle may have been modified to shoot 308. They sell a chamber plug that is a ring of metal that slides up into place in the front part of the chamber and shortens it to the 308 length.

A gunsmith could do a chamber cast and remove it for you if you want to shoot 30-06.

Also it would tell you for sure what the gun is chambered for.

truthfully Springfield Armory (the financial company, not the closed US armory...) DID produce new M1 Rifles. manufacturing ran for some years and stopped lower back some years in the past. SA isn't presently generating the M1. The "new" ones use a forged receiver. extra helpful to purchase a advantageous USGI sort. edit: To be sparkling, i'm speaking approximately an M1 Garand clone. not the M1A, M14 clone.

Whoa hang on buddy, you should know your firearm before you even try to cram a shell into it.

The M1 carbine fires the .30 Carbine round. You can get them at any place that sells ammo - I picked up a pack at Walmart cause I needed it - but your local gun shop should have it, as well as the online retailers all have it in bulk.

.30 Carbine ammo goes into the US .30 Carbine M1 model.

And yes, you can shoot 12 gauge flares from a 12 gauge shotgun. I have fun firing off a "bird bomb" or two at the trap field at my club - they get your attention pretty well in the middle of a round. As long as your friends with a sense of humor are on the line with you...

It wont take 30.06 ammo at all. It takes 30 cal. Most any store has it even walmart. The reason it wont fit is because of the way the metal jackets are made. some are much different than others even though they have the same calibers. I'm not sure about the flare gun question. I think if yoiur shotgun is of good quality you could if you had to but I'd check with a gun smith first.

A M1 Carbine takes a .30carbine round. .30 carbine is a caliber of ammunition. If you can't find it try gun broker. Please don't try to shoot anything else in it. That gun if it's completely original can be worth over a $1000 (WWII era). The CMP program just got a load of them in and are getting ready to sell them soon. You can check them out through the Annistion Army Depot's web site.
