You didn't tell us what the lumps were caused by. Did you try and thicken up the soup with flour or cornstarch without making a slurry? That's just a guess. If you have an imerrsion blender you could give that a spin or if you don't, pour half of what you have in a blender, careful if it's hot, blend, pour into another pot or bowl and do the same with the other half, combine the 2 and you're good to go.

Depending on the type of soup you could use a potato masher. Can't imagine what caused the lumps in the first place. Is it soup you are cooking from the beginning or canned soup? For canned soup, such as tomato, add the water gradually and keep mixing before you heat.

Know how to make a roux? Always make the roux first (1:1, butter to flour). Melt the butter over low-medium heat, add the flour and stir well until the roux begins to take on some color and you get rid of the taste of the flour.
