Make sure you select English on the left, and whether the English word you type in should be at the beginning or the end of the selection, or exactly match it, or even be just a part of it.
As an example, when I typed in 'bird' with the match being the beginning of the result, I got this;
http://www.yesjapan.com/dictionary/yesjapan200k.php?language=english&searchplace=beginning&searchfor=bird&go=Search%21&maxsearch=25
It's called Romaji by the way - the method of writing Japanese words and phrases in the Roman alphabet.

I always use the following site:

It's not always correct (and let's face it- no online dictionary is going to be completely accurate; only nuanced print dictionaries are really reliable), but it's pretty good and I quite depend on it.
