I don't think everybody gets depressed. Depression is not like a headache. It's not something everyone gets.

Part of the issue is that we use the word depressed in different ways. Many people say depressed when they mean sad, down, not feeling fit or well. But real depression is much worse.
If somebody dies in your life, you will be very sad. It might affect your mood, your daily activities; you might not want to get up every day... this is normal for a few weeks. It's light depression, mostly very heavy sadness.
But if your life continues to be too hard and you still feel awful after a month or two, you are probably clinically depressed (minor clinical depression) and ought to see a psychiatrist. They might give you a med for a couple months and talk therapy about how this event affects you. You should be better after a couple months.
If you are not better after a couple months and your life and health are still badly affected, you may be in a major clinical depression. This can also sometimes last only a short time but also it can last a very long time. You are unable to do the daily things that you need to do to survive. For instance maybe you almost never get out of bed. You miss deadlines and have bad consequences. You don't want to see people. Etc. Usually this clears up with temporary meds and talk therapy. If it happens again, you have a real illness to contend with.
There is also a kind of depression called dysthymia. This means a low-grade depression all the time. It doesn't keep you from going on in life, but you don't get a lot of enjoyment out of daily life. This can be true for all of someon e's life. To me it's like looking through a grey veil at the world, never seeing or hearing or tasting the world with quite the realness and goodness that others have. It can be true all a person's life.
If you find yourself in my description under clinical depression or dysthymia, that is, if the sad heavy feelings last several months, you need to see a doctor. It doesn't mean you are crazy, it just means your body chemicals are having a hard time returning to the normal state. You may take meds that increase seratonin, a natural body chemical that keeps you feeling good.
Another way to combat any form of depression or even if you just want to feel good is the methods of the teachers at artofliving.org. They will teach you scientifically proven methods of making your whole life better, your thinking more clear, your life more enjoyable. A lot of it has to do with the vagus nerve, which is kind of the other half of your mood health. You will take an easy 6-day course and will feel good benefits right away. I've never heard of anyone who didn't say it improved their life. it's great for depression.
It's also great for anybody at all who wants to think more clearly, be less stressed, have more purpose in life, or just be happier and feel more love.
I hope I have helped you and maybe other readers who might be sad or depressed too. Good luck!
Natasha

Yes, I think everyone does at one time or another. However, the reasons for depression varies from person to person. I have depression, but I am bipolar, and not all who have depression is bipolar. Unipolar is also similar to bipolar, but you only have the depression, not the manic side. Depression is one of the easiest mental illnesses to treat! You don't have to be depressed. However, the medication takes about 1-2 weeks before it takes affect completely, some medications you will notice the difference right away. But you need to go to the doctor to get a proper diagnosis! Don't WAIT, symptoms will get worse over time, and you can't "pull yourself up by your boot straps" like the older generations tried to teach us; and you can't arrest it, it will just keep getting worse without any intervention.

Yes it is quite normal for most people to become a little depressed from time to time so don't get depressed about being depressed!
Why is too big a question to ask here!
Consider your thought patterns, if they are too negative then replace them with pleasing thoughts. Eat good food, excercise and take up meditation. Avoid alcohol and drugs. Avoid doctors if possible!

I imagine, that most people, 'Feel down' at certain times of their life...
Some people get Depressed or have episodes of Depression...
I have suffered with Depression, for 10 years, but, i haven't had any bad episodes with Depression, since my ex-husband left me (He worsened my condition).
I take anti-depressants... which are a man made supplement, for the chemical in my brain, that i'm lacking.
Most people, that suffer with episodes of depression, don't need anti-depressants.
So, why do people get depressed?
A tradegy or a number of emotional events, happening, within a short span of time.
If you ran too many programs on a computer, the computer might crash / freeze...
Our brain, isn't a computer, but our brains contain, far more information and adding tradegies, such as a death of a friend or relative... giving birth.. moving house etc etc...
We get an over-load of information and emotions...
Most cases of 'Feeling Down' and Depressive episodes, can be helped with counselling.
Counselling, is like taking the lid of a pan, of boiling water and letting out the steam!
If you haven't suffered with a Depressive episode, count yourself lucky.. or perhaps, you are on borrowed time LOL
If you feel depressed, see your GP (family doctor).

Yes everyone does get depressed at some time, because we can't be happy at all times and there will be sad things that happen to us to trigger this. We all have a "off day" now and again, and when we do we just feel miserable from when we wake up onwards and this is natural!

Depression and sadness are NOT the same thing. Sadness is just feeling blue after something bad happens. Depression is a constant sad mood for a long period of time that affects interests, being social, eating habits and sleeping habits.

Yeah I think everyone gets depressed at some time or other - because life doesn't always go your way and we can't all be optimistic/cheerful all of the time - sometime everyone is going to ask why me? whats the point? how am I going to get through this? It just affects different people in different ways and not everyone is willing to admit to / talk about it openly.
