When the government started to crack down on smokers in general, they decided it was bad for children to see the advert as it would encourage them to smoke. In fact you hardly see an advert anywhere for cigarettes or cigars, Im not sure when but it was the governments Health paper that stopped the advertising. I agree about what you say about drinking and alcohol. I can smoke a packet and cigarettes and be in no danger to other road users, the same can not be said about somebody who has been drinking all night. If everybody in England stopped smoking tomorrow the government would be thrown into panic by the amount of loss revenue, we would see a sudden rise in petrol prices again, as this seems to be the best bet to raise money these days

The reason why cigarette advertising is banned from TV is because a lot of people see cigarettes and how much harm they can cause to your body, especially the lungs. Of course they don't make anyone high or drunk, but alcohol is evaluated as being safer, although if it is abused, it can really screw up a person's life. They evaluate alcohol as safe, because a person can drink a brew and not do any damage to their body, sure it will do very little damage, but they say beer can be good for the body in some ways.

i agree with you that it should, we have on the one hand companies how great it is to drink, and on the other, as you say, people being warned about the dangers of binge drinking.
Yes smoking is harmful, and I agree that people shouldn't have to breath in other peoples smoke, but what about the effects caused by drinking. I've never been threatened by someone who's had one to many cigarettes, or had them throw up near me, or for that matter vandalise other peoples property.
OK the cost to the Heath service is another argument, in that smokers are a drain on resources. On the drink side of the equation, you have not only the long term damage such as liver failure and all that's associated with it, but all of the drunks in A&E Departments needing treatment, and those injured or killed as a result of drink driving.
I'm not advocating a nanny state, but let's see all the facts on these habits.

Because there is more money to be made from liquor. Plus drinking is fun, here in the States there is a saying about the 3 Martini Lunch, it wouldn't be as much fun if was a 3 Cigarette Lunch.

Everyone is saying that cigarettes cause more harm to your body but it you consistently drink too much you risk damaging major organs too so I don't think its necessarily to do with that.
I personally don't think any of it should be advertised at all, althought there's not so much social stigma attached to booze as there is to cigarettes.

I think this is a very good question! I have never seen anyone get into a car after smoking and kill someone! I don't think either one should be advertised because they try to make it look cool to smoke or drink.

I think smoking is worse than drinking.. everyone who has a drink has a choice.. but not everyone has a choice at being a passive smoker.. I still don't think alcohol should be advertised though..

Well, they do have smokers meetings. and it CAN cause marriages and other relationships to go down the drain.... but the reason you can't advertise smokes, and you can alcohol is because there is no safe way to somoke, but there are safe ways to drink......
I asked the same question, to myself, and came to the realization this is the only real explination. Because you're right, they are both bad, and unhealthy, but one is safer. because smokes have 43 cancer causing chemicals. And alcohol doesn't have that factor against it.
GREAT QUESTION!

it is banned because cigarettes are directly causing harm to people. ie. lung cancer, breathing problems and other severe problems. but drinking on the other hand is a controlled substance because unlike cigarettes, where people can smoke anywhere they want, drinking is only available in their own homes, in a bar but never on streets. smoking is. and therefore it is banned from advertising. it is also banned because it is bad influence for kids. drinking can be controlled by cops etc. ..but smoking isnt because its also harder for cops to watch kids smoke. thats y smoking is banned from television.

Booze adverts get away with it, you see, as they put "Enjoy alcohol responsibly" or words to that effect.
