Lying is saying something other than the truth.
God is the Truth.
Therefore, Lying even in a little issue, mean replacing partially God by something else.
Lying is a huge sin

Most times, but not always. It's a matter of intent, and what the greater good is. When Rahab the Harlot lied to save the lives of the two Israelite spies, I don't think God counted it as a sin towards her.
If some murders broke into your house, and you told your children to hid, I don't think it would be a sin to tell the murders that you're alone.
For a lie to be a sin, it's a matter of the heart.

It is the sin that is the most committed of all sins and probably the worst one of all. It was one of the 7 deadly sins.
Most problems would be remedied if people quit lying.
