If you want to try and tame the love birds take them to an avian vet and have their wings clipped first of all. After the wings are clipped you can try handeling them, you just need to go slowly. If the birds were hand fed that should make it a little easier because at somepoint in their lives they had a lot of human interaction.

As for taking your bird out it is not really a safe thing to do especially in a parking lot because birds scare easily. If this is something you really want to do start with a tame bird, make sure you keep the wings clipped (don't forget this is something you need to do at least 3-4 times a year depending on when the bird molts) because it only takes one flight feather on each side, a slight gust of wind and your bird is gone.

One other thing to do is do a search on Sally Blanchard becasue she is a avian behaviorist and I am sure you can find some good information on taming your birds.

Dear Lizzy, I believe you can train this bird. The bird is afraid of you also. Approach the cage quietly and with purpose. Choose a key word to signal the bird that a treat is at hand. Put a treat in your fist and say the key word and show the bird. Repeat this several times for 3 days.Say the word and offer the treat for 4 days with lots of repetition. Do this until the bird takes the treat a few times.Next. Present a handheld perch and use the key word and give the treat. Repeat as necessary. Finally, offer your finger using the keyword and treat method. If you put the effort, you should have a better relationship in 2-3 weeks. If the bird bites, don't overreact and push its beak toward the bird. I have found that a bird will sell its soul for a special treat. A wild bird is a wild bird no matter its species.Patience and repetition really is the key. You can tame any bird and especially this one.Keep your cool. You are alpha bird. I use sunflower seeds. Some people use a clicker instead of a keyword. It's up to you.Good luck and have a tweet new year.

Not sure how to answer your question, but will try. First, you said A lovebird, and then several times, you say THEY... iF YOU HAVE TWO OR MORE IN the cage, that have never been handled, they have bonded to each other, and their cage, and you probably never be able to handle them, because they have reverted to their wild, inborn, instincts!!! But if you only have one, that was hand-raised, you may gain his trust, just by being around him as much as you can, being kind and gentle, and talk to him soothingly, whenever you are in the room(the more the better).. Never try to force yourself on him, let him get to know you, warm-up to you, and develop his trust!!! Only time will tell, but be patient---otherwise, if you want a shoulder-bird, you may have to get another one that has been hand-raised, and already used to people. Keep an eye in the paper, and the bulletin board at your local stores, also animal shelter, for some-one that may be moving, or something, and needs someone to adopt their pet, then you will also be doing a good deed. Be patient, gentle, & Good Luck---Birdman

Yea, cockatiels are awesome pets. We had one when I was younger for 4 years. It talked up a storm and had free run of the home. he'd just run around doing whatever he wanted. Visiting and eating with everyone. the neighbors cat broke into our home and decided that Pretty Boy was a snack :( He was yelling 'let me out! let me out!' but he was so loud all the time, that we thought that he was just trying to wake everyone up. the cat got him within seconds. I just got my own cockatiel a few days ago and have spoiled it rotten! All she wants to do is sit on my shoulders. She's gone everywhere with me the last few days. the grocery store, my moms house, all over. I have 6 kids so she is getting plenty of attention and thinks that she 'belongs' on someone shoulders. If you put her down she chases us and jumps back on our shoulders. I've already taught her to give kisses. I've had lovebirds before. But, just like yours they were wild. Get a cockatiel if you want a cool carry along bird. There are halters that you can get just for safety. My birds wings are cut. And she wouldn't try to fly away anyway. But, just for safety get the halter if you're going to be taking the bird out with you.

Sit in front of the bird cage and talk to it for at least a 3 hours every day, (birds require that because if they dont get it they start plucking their feathers and get depressed) then it will start to get to know you, hand feed it once in a while when it lets you (try holding your hand close to the cage so that it can't bite you but it can reach the seed) and every time you walk by its cage say hello to it so it knows you think about, make sure you never ignore it. it should start to get to Know you eventually

Keep your distance at first and respect them. Announce it to them whenever you're reaching into their cage and do so quietly. Speak when you're around them, so you don't appear to be sneaking up on them. I play music for mine. They seem to like the Red Hot Chili Peppers..

You have to have a pre hand fed bird from birth, unless you go through pain staking time to train him yourself, yeah, that should be your new year's resolution.

Lovebirds are hard to tame, unless their babies and are being handfed. Id give them away, and start over.
