Prozac is just a brand name. It's generic name is fluoxetine... Well, it's basically an antidepressant (pharmaceutically it is a Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor/SSRI). It is indicated for various forms of depression, often in conjunction with psychotherapy...Books also would say it's for obssessive-complusive disorder, bulimia and panic disorder. Prozac (fluoxetine) is an antidepressant medication originally approved by the FDA in 1987 and currently available for the treatment of depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and bulimia nervosa. Prozac has also been used off-label (which means a use not reviewed by the FDA) to treat panic disorder. Under a different brand name (Sarafem), fluoxetine is also approved for the treatment of premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). Prozac is believed to work by blocking the reabsorption of serotonin, a neurotransmitter or chemical messenger in the brain. It is a member of the serotonin-reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) family, as are Zoloft (sertraline) and Paxil (paroxetine).

Prozac is a medication known as an SSRI- a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor. It inhibits serotonin from being retaken up by neurons, allowing serotonin to stay in the synaptic cleft in between neurons longer to be utilized by your body for many functions. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter derived from the amino acid tryptophan and helps regulates mood, appetitie, sleep, metabolism, etc. Prozac is given to people mostly as an anti-depressant, but it can also be used for OCD, panic attacks, PMDD (pre-menstrual dysphoric disorder) and other anxiety issues. Usually, the increase of serotonin in the synaptic cleft helps increase the serotonin available to your brain, which helps to regulate your mood and make you not as depressed.

"Fluoxetine hydrochloride (Prozac) is an antidepressant drug used medically in the treatment of depression, body dysmorphic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, bulimia nervosa, premenstrual dysphoric disorder, hypochondriasis and panic disorder. Fluoxetine was derived from an antihistamine found to inhibit reuptake of the neurotransmitter serotonin.

Compared to other popular selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), fluoxetine has a strong energizing effect. This makes fluoxetine highly effective in treatment of clinical depression cases where symptoms like depressed mood and lack of energy prevail. Although stimulating, it is also approved for a variety of anxiety disorders, including panic disorder and obsessive compulsive disorder." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fluoxetine

its a Rx used for depression and a few other ones, it falls under the SSRI group as somebody else has already explained, i do agree with someone that stated stay away from it, seriously, on a biochemical level, it literally rewires your brain, trust me i have taken SSRI's, here is a brief list of a few, Zoloft, Paxil, Celexa, Zyban.....you have to take them for 6 weeks to notice any positive reactions, but notice side effects within the first 2 weeks, and of those there are more than i have room for, i'll stick to my Diazapam thank-you (benzodiazapines)
