Only a god is allowed to have exclusive acsess to the intense pleasures of the forbidden fruit. This is something that everyone else is to be made envious of for they are not in the god club.
He commanded them to not eat it, for they are not worthy of expierencing this kind of pleasure.
Satan tempted Adam and Eve to eat as a experiment to see if they would be punished, and how badly. This was so that he knew how safe it was to eat the fruit.
If they were not punished, he would be able to eat ALL the fruit.
This incident gave rise to the term "Forbidden pleasure"

Genesis tries to explain our environment and present circumstances. How we all got here and why things are the way we find them. It is not a deductive scientific work but an inductive instruction. Firstly it tells us that the world is basically good. We do not need to live in fear, we have a privileged position on this planet and that of course carries some responsibility. Next we need to know why there is pain and suffering. The story of the fall, tells us that we could not keep the simplest of rules. Man and woman knew God and they knew they were God's beloved creatures. They lived in harmony with all creation. Why could they not be content with enjoying Eden? We always want to go beyond our limitations - to have the knowledge of the gods - to know good and evil.
This is our weakness and strength, to reach beyond our natural limitations, to ride rather than walk, to fly rather than run, to control the temperature in our rooms, to ingest chemicals to soothe our pains. Going beyond our station has risks but it also extends us. Adam and Eve may have lost Eden but they became the parents of an entire race. Life brings us mixed blessings. We can learn, we can improve but if we do not act with wisdom and respect, we will also pay a price.
This story is a wonderful piece of literature with great wisdom for those who are looking for wisdom; but its a story you should read in the first person.

god knew it was going to happen all along. it was his plan to make it so we would start the world off on a perfect note, then our own human decision of eating the fruit would lead us to chaos (aka the world as it is now). now all we have to do is rely on him based on our own decision.
basically, its because he wanted to make people to be able to make their own concious decision to follow god or not, freewill.
therefore, we arent a bunch of god puppets.
the garden is to show us what we can have once we accept him again, granted, not until we die.
it also was to test mans faithfulness. obviously, we arent perfect, so we need him to forgive us. god allowed the serpent (devil) to tempt them. He promises in the bible he would not give you something more than you can handle, so therefore, its not like they were forced to take the apple. they chose.

it is because it was a test. a test from god.God was testing them to see if they are actually are going to eat the fruit since he already knows away ways.He was testing their obedience from them and god didn't plain for the serpent to temp Adam and Eve but god knows always.

For temptation. God wanted to see if we could resist evil. Apparently we can't. Stupid Eve.

Free Will. He gave them a choice. Why do people make such simple concepts into something so hard?
