The very symbol of Islam is a crescent moon and a star. The moon is present in the flags of some Islamic countries such as Algeria, Malaysia, Pakistan, Mauritania, Azerbaijan, Brunei and Turkey. Why do Muslims pray when there is a crescent moon in the night sky? Why is there such a fascination with the Moon in Islam? Where does it all originate from?

Muslims follow a lunar year like Israel, hence the moon, for the months of the year, where the days begin and end at sunset.

The crescent is not an Islamic symbol. You have got to blame the weakness of Arabs and their dominance by Christianity for seeking a symbol to match the Cross.

Muslims pray five times each day and there is only one prayer at night.

The crescent signifies the beginning of the month and has no other significance but to tell when to begin and end the fasting.

Nowadays there is no need to look to the skies for a moon because the months can be scientifically calculated to the second or fraction of the second, so you must say the crescent is a symbol of ancient Arab calculation of time.

I just wanna say something. The crescent moon on the Turkish flag is not the symbol of Islam. It is said that Atatürk, the founder of the Turkish Republic, saw the reflection of the crescent moon and the star, on the blood of the dead solidiers who were fighting for freedom

Well, I just read about it. The crescent has nothing to do with Islam as a religion, see it did not exist when Mohammed was alive.
it appeared after the Muslims started expanding the Islamic empire, they found in the Churches the cross, as a symbol. So, they wanted a symbol for them as well, so they chose the crescent and started to put it up and then it became a popular thing to do.
Muslims do not pray with there is a crescent moon in the sky, I haven't witness that...
The moon and its phases is important because our calendar relies on it, see the Gregorian calendar is related to the sun, while the Islamic calendar is related to the moon.
The moon really has nothing to do with Islam...

It is a reminder that allah was the moon god of the pagan arabs, and not the true God of the Bible.
