If you're just getting a cut, I would recommend collecting some photos of styles you like that you think would work. This is a good website to get started:
http://www.hair-styles.org/
This is a fun site, too:
http://beauty.ivillage.com/stc/hairstylist/hairstylist.html?o=dcm,vhs,iv,el,vhstopic,bs,lnav
(It's the Virtual Hairstylist at iVillage, in case the link doesn't work.)
And then this is my SECRET TIP for successfully communicating with your stylist. ;-) Also take in photos of styles that are similar to what you want but that you DON'T like. That way, you can say, for example, "I want long layers, but I don't want them to look like this." Or, "I want my hair in a curly updo, but not all over the place like this."
This second step really helps clarify things and make sure you and your stylist are on the same page.

Probably not. They may have hair magazines you can look through. Your best bet is to look on the internet or buy a few hair magazines of your own to find a style you would like to try.

Usually they have books that you can look at, but it might be a good idea to find a picture out of a magazine that you like and bring it with you.

Yes, they have books, pictures etc. A good stylist will help you decide whats best for your face, and bone structure and guide you to a good cut/style.
