I am going to Florida in the end of January and will be back in the beginning of February and I don't know what to do with my dog. Should I put him in a kennel, but I heard that dogs can get really sick in there.

There are a lot of options and pros-cons to each. There is nothing wrong with kennels, and many dogs enjoy kennels. However, you have to choose your kennel wisely. Visit without the dog, but do not tell them you are coming. Explain when you arrive that you are going away and wanted to check the facilities. Ask how the dogs are cared for- walks, feeding, play time etc. Then see if you can kennel him for a day while you are still here to see how he/she reacts to the situation. Kennels today are very different than they use to be; many provide individual walks and playtime, group playtime, swim time (seaonally and breed specific) along with very comfortable and homey conditions. Talk to your veterinarian about kennels they recommend; ask other dog people you know where they recommend. Reputable, quality kennels do not have the health problems that others do, particularly because of the vaccine requirements etc.

A second option is to see if a friend or family member can either watch him/her at their house, or watch him/her at your house. This way he/she can be in an environment more similar to what he/she is use to and does not have to be in a kennel situation.

A third option is to find yourself a dog sitters. Dog sitters do not have kennels and traditionally will go to your house to take care of the dog (some will take one animal into their house at a time, but not many). These people will go to your house as many times a day as you wish, play with your dog, take the dog for a walk etc. All of this is within the comfort of your own house; and thus the dog is in an environment that is familiar. If you are considering this option, call you veterinarian and ask for recommendations. Generally they will have cards on file.

I use to live in up-state NY, capital district, so if that's an area you live in, I can possibly direct you to a few people (both kennels and dog sitters); i know a couple quality options up there

not so much sick, but they are mistreated, ignored, etc.

you could try taking the animal with you, I live in florida and there are kennels here if you need to do something for a few days without the dog. as for hotels they are pretty cool about animals..and if not...that's what the "do not disturb" signs are for! I snuck the cat into many hotels on the way down here.

end-January to early Feb - sounds like not a very long period? Seek the help of a close friend or neighbor if you don't want to risk putting him in in a kennel. Pity I'm a million miles away, or I'd love to have him for a while.

You have several choices. If there are no friends or family who can look in on your pet while you're gone or take it for you, you can find a reliable pet sitter or boarding kennel. Usually your local Vet knows of reliable people to contact for this purpose. Many Vets offices actually board animals now.

There are many pet sitter websites to find sitters in your area who will either take the dog for you, stay at your home while you're gone, or look in on your pet as often as you specify.

I would definitely leave your dog with your friends or family, someone that you can trust and wouldn't mind watching it. Otherwise I would bring it to a kennel that you know is clean and safe!

Have someone you trust take care of the dog for you.

If that is not an option, I suggest getting him vaccinated with bordatella vaccine, and make sure he is up to date on all others, and he should be fine being boarded. Just be sure to board him somewhere that will give him regular walks and playtime, if you have the money.

If you are worried about him getting ill, then many vet clinics offer boarding, but do not have the staff to donate time to give your dog pleny of one on one attention, so weigh your options.

Your vet may board, family or friend could stay at your house or just come over 3 times per day for food, potty & excercise. If you have a PetSmart close by, it may have a pets hotel. Very clean, quiet, fed, watered, walked & played with daily. I used it, dogs loved it!

Do you have any friends who could come in and feed and walk your dog? There are "Dog Sitters". Look in your local paper, or ask your vet. Or ask friends. My daughter used to "Dog Sit". If you know someone who knows the dog and that you and the dog trust, that person could come in and take the dog for walks, feed him, play with him, etc. Or take him to his/her home while you are gone.
