Chicken pox is caused by a virus (varicella zoster) which is easily transmitted from person to person, which is why it hits most people in childhood--the close proximity of the school setting and such.
However, it is not at all uncommon to go through one's entire childhood without getting it.
The important thing to note is that you can still get it as an adult, and the effects can potentially be much more serious. Talk to your doctor. He or she may recommend that you get vaccinated.

Many people have been able to avoid chicken pox when they were children. But that doesn't mean that you can never get it as an adult. As a matter of fact, as an adult, should you contract chicken pox, it can be quite dangerous. Be sure to check with your doctor should you have any suspicion about this!
The upswing to this is that only those of us who did have chicken pox as a child can get shingles, an excruciatingly painful, but otherwise benign condition that lasts weeks. Come to think of it, I think I had measles, not chicken pox, so I'm right there with you in the danger zone. I'm 53.

You get it from being around people who have it or have been exposed to it.
It's unusual for you not to have had chicken pox by the time you are 18, but not abnormal. Some people are immune or partially immune.
Contracting it as an adult is much more painful and dangerous than contracting it as a child.
