Cramps can be caused by cold or overexertion. Illness or poisoning can also cause cramps, particularly in the stomach, which is referred to as colic if it fits particular characteristics.

There are two basic causes of cramping. One is inadequate oxygenation of muscle, and the other is lack of water or salt. Cramps from poor oxygenation can be improved by rapid deep breathing, as well as stretching the muscle. Cramps from lack of salt and water can be treated by stretching the muscle, and of course drinking water and increasing salt intake. Pounding on the muscle can increase soreness.

Muscle cramps in particular can be treated by applying a soft massage on the cramped muscle, stretching the muscle and applying heat or cold. Heat improves superficial blood circulation and makes muscles more flexible, so some people find that heat is more soothing for muscle cramps than applying ice.

Electrolyte disturbance may cause cramping and tetany of muscles, particularly hypokalemia (a low level of potassium) and hypocalcemia (a low level of calcium). This problem can be solved by drinking electrolyte enhanced fluids, such as Gatorade, after strenuous muscle activity.

Muscle cramps may be a symptom of Hypothyroidism.

Where are the cramps located? Stomach or where the menstrual cramps usually are? If your last period was somewhere around 2 weeks ago, you could be having ovulation cramps. Otherwise you could've strained a muscle. Do you have a heating pad? Heating pads can help soothe the crampiness.

I get muscle cramps in my legs(I'm a man) so bad they wake me in my sleep. Its alot of zinc in my diet and potassium (bannanna) helps break up the deposits in my muscles. if its a girl thing I dont have any valuable info except all my ex's would have sex to get rid of their girl cramps, and they weren't normally nice about asking.

Sorry, but you didn't put in specificly what type of cramps so I dont know. If it really concerns you just go to your doctor. Good Luck and Happy new Year! :-)
