Vanilla Ice Cream

5 egg yolks

2/3 cups sugar

1 cup half and half

2 tablespoons butter

1 cup whipping cream

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Beat yolks and sugar until blended. Pour in top of double boiler. Stir in half and half. Cook and stir over boiling water until thickens. Set aside - stir in butter. While cooling on a rack, stir occasionally until room temperature. Stir in whipping cream and vanilla. Freeze according to manufacturers directions.

this is how we make it at my house and it works as eggnog as well. recipe for homemade icecream:
4 eggs
2 or 3 cups of sugar
4 cups milk
2-3 teaspoons of vanilla (use more or less depending on how much flavor you want)
anything else you want to put in is optional.
you need a big mixing bowl and a whisk but i'd suggest a electric mixer to do it faster.
directions:
1. Crack open and put the eggs in a mixing bowl. be sure it can go in the freezer.
2. Add the vanilla and sugar. stir in the sugar with a whisk. mix until all the egg is in the sugar.
3. Pour the milk into the mixture and mix it completely until it's all togeather.
4. Put it in the freezer and then every hour or so pull it out and stir it around so that it doesn't freeze hard. otherwise it will be as hard as a rock when you go to serve and eat it.

1 to 2 cups sugar
2 qts of any combination:
1/2 & 1/2 cream whole milk {I use 2 cups cream and 6 cups 1/2 &1/2}
2 teaspoons vanilla
any fruit diced very small or 1 cup fruit puree. {only if you want}
place into ice cream maker add rock salt and crushed ice. follow ice cream makers directions..when it gets hard, can't turn the handle or motor stalls, it is ready to be packed in more ice and salt to ripen..let set 1 or so.hours.. .mmmmgood. or place into bowl in freezer stir frequently until hard..freezer make a hard ice cream unless you eat it before it hardens..Ice cream maker make a soft ice cream. either way serve plain or with toppings, nuts etc..enjoy.

We bought a churning machine, rock salt, and ice cream mixes at Walmart. The first time was great. Vanilla. Then machine then turned to solid rust, even after washing and drying it completely, so we never did it again.

you can definitely use a blender to prepare the custard and mix it with your favourite fruit. and you can make icecream and sorbet even without an ice cream maker, what you need to do is place your cream in a container with lid (e.g. click clack plastic containers are quite good), and leave it in a freezer, but have to remember to stir it regularly every hour or so until it's thickened.
