There are certainly plenty of soldiers who enlist because they're bored or have nothing better to do, and you could say their unconscious led them. But there are even more who make the able-minded choice to do so. Their reasons vary from person to person as much as anything else you've ever seen, but they made the choice.

Their UNCONSCIOUSNESS? Are you for real? How can someone who is UNCONSCIOUS (not awake) enlist? Try re-thinking and rewording your question.
I, for one, was VERY awake, VERY aware when I enlisted in 1965. People enlist for many different reasons; wanting to do something for their country, a job, education, training, family tradition, to "get outta Dodge," just to name a few. I was proud to serve in the world's strongest military force and I would do it again if I had the chance. I've been retired from the US Navy since '85. Check out patriotguard.org for a view of others who were NOT unconscious when they joined.

Do you know what the word "volunteer" means? It means that people do something because they WANT to. After 9/11/2001, recruitment for the US armed forces was up. The reason for the increase was the same as it was after Pearl Harbor, they choose to defend our country from those that would attack us.

Most ( If not all ) just join to get a paycheck. They can't make it in civilian life so they take the easy way out and join the military and from that day forward they are told what to do and how to do it. The American soldier works for that small paycheck and will say to the world "I love my country". But stop that paycheck and the so called American soldier will stop working. The insurgents, on the other hand, will work for free. ( They do not get a paycheck ) But take a good look. The insurgents are hurting the USA day in and day out...........and they do it for free. No paycheck. ( Note: Guess who will win in Iraq?) Anyone remember Vietnam? They ( Insurgents ) also worked for free.

I grew up as a military dependent, then served four years myself. I volunteered, as many of the men in my family did before me, to protect the very freedom that you enjoy to post comments like the one you asked. We would rather you just say thank you, and not talk about those joining the military whether you agree with it or not. Just be glad you live somewhere that you can express your dissatifaction without recourse.

They volunteer, sweetie. Then their "unconsciousness" takes over, thank God for that. Someone on YA said that American soldiers kill to protect innocent people, but the Iraqi insurgents kill innocent people because they like and want to. I fully agree.

It is correct to say that they volunteer to serve just as it is to say you are a coward.
