The Glock is the best semi-automatic weapon. A 40 or 10. Nine mil bullets arent that expensive. Or get a 22 bullets are really cheap. The longest lasting guns are revolvers. Rusty, dusty and trusty! a 38 bullets arent that expensive. As far as rifles a AK-47 is the longest lasting without a doubt. Not cheap to fire all the time but Definateley long lasting. Double Barrels last for ever too. Mine is 50 years old I just shot it today.

I think that while the proposal is perposterous, the concept is ingenious, but not altogether original. I agree with alot of comments/remarks that have been made so far in that this wouldn't be a solution. I think that in addition to putting in processes in place to make private gun ownership more of a measure of accountability than a right, the following "rights" should also be subject to a higher level of accountability: The right to parent - we are making parents more accountable, but not for the right actions. The right to view media content displaying violence. - I bet if violent programming were available at a pay per view rate, more people either wouldn't have access to violence in media or would seriously consider the importance of watching TV programs where people suffer violence. I don't know about anyone else, but it makes me uncomfortable to watch someone "die". The right to inflict violence in any form on other living things - I'm sure those who initiated the amendment for the freedom of speech would roll over in their graves to hear some of the content that comes out of our mouths everyday. I really don't understand how our society looks at foul language and words spoken in ager (i.e. threats, verbal lashings, etc) as the "norm". Even after giving someone a tongue lashing that was probably "well deserved", I still didn't feel quite right. I was more angry at myself afterwards. Just some thoughts...I do understand where you are coming from though. I hope one day I get sick enough of human degredation that I make a proactive impact.

Any Glock. Extremely reliable and designed with the shooter in mind. Glocks were designed with safeties that make the response time better. Whoever gets off the shot first in a firefight will win, and that is the principal Glocks are built off of.
Now you can get them in various calibers such as 9mm, .45acp, .357. and .40s&w. 9mm is a good choice for it's variety of ammo, low cost of ammo, plenty of stoping power, lower recoil, and higher capacity in magazines. A glock will never wear out and are very easy to maintain. Also reletivly low cost. You can get a glock 17 from mid $400's-$600.

For me, the SKS I bought was fairly cheap and surplus rounds for it were very inexpensive. I have fired literally thousands of rounds through the weapon, and it still works like a champ.
Since it has a fixed 10 round magazine, you won't have any problems with the firearms laws in the US.
For hunting, I believe you will need to purchase a smaller magazine, which isn't a problem. Winchester makes a 123 grain softnose cartridge that will preform very similarly to a .30-30. I would highly recommend a better stock, which can be bought for around $50.

If your talking hand guns, then consider GLOCKs. Well over 10,000 rounds threw my Glock 22 and all i've ever replaced was a guide spring. As far as cheap ammo, look at either the glock 17 or glock 19. They are chambered for the 9mm Luger round which is about the cheapest centerfire pistol round.

If you take care of them properly, most weapons will last longer than you will. The way you phrase the question leads me to believe you don't wish to maintain the weapon. If that is the case, go for cheap. You will wear down any weapon in short order.

I've owned a lot of pistols and the best so far that I've ever had is the Baby Desert Eagle .40 cal. I've put around 8000 rds. through it and the barrel is still in good condition. Further more it has never jammed on me and its extremely accurate.
