I also wrap my baked potatoes and cook them directly on the rack. I have read, though, that some people do not consider those potatoes baked, but rather steamed. I have tried baking them unwrapped, (no oil, salt, or anything) and they do have a great taste, but tend to be a bit drier. (So you get to put on a bit more butter!)

The best and quickest way to bake a potato is to wash it, cut some slits in it and stick it in a plastic bake, make the bag kind of loose and stick in the microwave for approx. 8 mins. It will be done all the way through and the inside of the potato is nice and fluffy! But be careful when taking it out, the bag is super hot and so it the potato.

You can rub them with a bit of butter instead of the olive oil if you're feeling sinful. On the other hand, if you're very virtuous you can omit the salt.
Use the cooking nails, as someone suggested, or prick them a few times with a fork, but I concur with the advice to wrap in foil.

That is totally a good recipe, in foil, on the rack.....if you want to get a bit fancier, but still easy, cut the potato in half, throw in some onions, and cheez whiz, and wrap tight and bake....mmmmm but be careful unwrapping!! melted cheese hurts

Be sure to poke them with a fork first before wrapping them in foils this stops them from exploding. Yes you put them right on the rack.

Wash/scrub it with a vegetable brush (if you don't have one use a nail brush). Put into a preheated oven at 350 for an hour. Check if done by spearing it with a fork...if it goes in easily, it is done, if not bake a bit longer.

I bake them like you do except, I use a fork to pierce them lightly and then when it is 40 minutes, cut them slightly at top, put in cheddar cheese and cook till it is brown. (I cook at 220 degrees but quite sometime though, I think an hour and a half.)
Upon taking it out, I eat it with cream cheese, spring onions and sometimes with bacon chips.
Love baked potatoes.
