They are trained on specific routes by the Guide Dog instructor whilst working with the blind person. If a new route needs to be taken the dog will learn the route if it uses the route often enough. David Blunkets dog Lucy needed to be retrained after the labour party were voted into government as she took him to the opposition benches when Parliament reopened after the election.

Unfortunately the 'bright' dogs wouldn't take to the training as they realised, quite quickly, that they still got fed and praised and played with even if they didn't do what they were asked to do. Most of the smart dogs went on to become drug dogs with either the police or customs and excise.

They have full intense training for many months/year before being given to the new owner - fab how they pick it up.....guess it's just like learning them to sit, paw etc.
We recently sponsered a guide dog for the blind but it didnt finish it's training as it had a heart and hip defect which may have strained it with further training. The rehomed it with an elderly couple so it didnt get too stressed (cos of it's heart etc) and it was good to know that they do all these checks too to make sure they are up to it and happy enough doing it - not stressed out or nervous dogs etc.

A well-trained dog makes everyone happy, including his owner. Take a little time training him, and you'll never regret it; you'll always have an obedient dog by your side. Find more https://tr.im/cbcix
By their nature, dogs are pack animals with a well-defined social order. Through basic training, you need to consistently make sure your puppy understands that you are the leader, not him. So in teaching him the basic rules, you take on the role of pack leader.
To fit into the family circle, your dog must be taught to recognize his name and such commands as come, heel, lie down and sit.

Familiarity, for some reason, my Mother's Guide Dog recognises the Burger King logo in any town that it may see one, also, if she ever tells the dog to "find Scott" it will take her to the local computer game or book stores, or import shop.

hes just taught it over years. since he was a puppy. The owner will say a word like bus stop, a replica will be made, and the dog will be taught that bus stop means to go to that pole/shelter. He associates words to objects, its like when you teach him to sit, you will say sit and he knows to just ....sit! lol and when you say "whers your ball? get your ball" he knows what the ball is.
