For ultra compact digitals, read on:
If you're going digital, get the most MP's you can afford. I've always liked Canon's. The Canon SD900 is awesome for an ultra compact! For something more affordable, compare the Canon SD600 to the SD630.
They have some neat features, like taking a shot of your friend in a red sweater and making everything else that isn't red black and white. They are also great at seaming three pics into one panoramic pic.

People ask me this all the time. What do you want to do with it? How much do you want to spend? How long do you plan on keeping it? Get the most expensive one you can afford. Can you change lenses on it? Do you want to change lenses on it? A good rule of thumb is a 50mm lens is pretty much the way your eye sees it, a high number is for telephoto, a lower # is usually a wider angle. I have 2 Canon A2E 35mm cameras. On one, I have a 28-200mm zoom lens. On the other I have a 28-300 zoom. They are both great for what I use them for. (Forensics) The 28-300mm came out about 2 years after I bought the first one. (That's the reason for having the 2 so close in range.) These are just a few things to look for when buying cameras. I have over $20,000.00 in equipment, and can always use more. Check with B&H camera& video in New York area. They are very helpful. Good luck!

A Polaroid is the brand of a digitail camera. I have one, and if you are wanting to buy a camera, go for the Polaroid. It only can hold 7 pictures, but if you get a disk with it, it should hold a good couple 100!

In my opinion either the canon powershot range or the sony cybershot range. For digital SLRs, Canon. Unfortunately Konica is out of production, sold to Sony. Or else they have a good range of SLRs. For companion utility software that goes with digital photography is PIcasa that helps you to store, organize, retreieve and edit. Download free @ http://www.geocities.com/lcming/Digitalphotography and at the same site download free Visualizer resizer that will resize any image that you wantto make smaller

depends on what you are using it for if professional photography - Nikon if home use - Kodak (a friend used to have one and says it was horrible) I have a 3 cannons in my family and they are great cameras and will take quite a beating. They are more expensive but in my opinion are worth it

Excellent brands are Sony, Nikon, Canon, and Olympus. You never mentioned if you want to control everything, fully automatic, plan to make lots of 8X10s, nor diid you mention if lots of zoom is important.

I prefer Nikon ever since Canon screwed their users years ago when they decided to make their auto-focus bodies not work with older lenses. Nikon did not do this. Virtually every Nikon lens ever made will work with their current line of DSLR's.

Decide what you want to use it for. What functions are important to you. Then check out dpreview.com for camera specs and prices.
