It is short for Cassandra. CASSANDRA. Cassandra is one of the few Greek mythological names that still reverberates with its ancient aura, that of a prophetess cursed with the fate of not being believed. In spite of that, Cassandra has been undergoing a major revival of late, showing up in the Top 50 — and even the Top 25 — in some states. It combines the initial K sound so popular today with the feminine formality of other fashionable names such as Alexandra, Amanda, and Melissa. One celebrity dad who chose it for his daughter is Charlie Sheen. The nickname CASS may still be too tied to the unfortunate Mama (who was born Ellen), but CASSIE is cute and provides a down-to-earth alternative to the name's full and somewhat imposing version. Cassie is (usually) a short form of Cassandra, an ancient Greek name that either means "killer of men" or "most excellent of men" (men being people). It's thought to be a version of Alexandra.

The name is also given meaning by the best-known Cassandra (or the oldest), who was a daughter of King Priam of Troy, and a priestess of the god Apollo. When she refused Apollo's sexual advances, he gave her the gift of true foresight, but cursed her that no-one would ever believe what she had to say.

Cassandra lived through the siege of Troy by the Greeks (all of this is according to Homer and other authors from antiquity) and prophesied the fall of the city - accurately. In Euripides' play The Trojan Women, she also prophesies her own death as a prisoner of war taken by Agamemnon, the Greek war leader, in Greece, and the punishment the gods will wreak on the Greeks. These events (her murder and the punishment of her murderer) are shown in Aeschylus' trilogy of plays about Mycenae.

To be a "Cassandra," then, is to be one who tells the truth about the future and is not believed. A recent example of this mythological usage was a character called Cassie in Buffy the Vampire Slayer season 7, who correctly predicted her own death, but was not believed by anyone.

My name, Jared, has more spellings than people to spell it, but whenever I see things with my name on it (Including one that says my name means "ruler"), it's always spelled this way. Just some trivia for you.
