My hair is about one inch long at the back, and often when I wake up, the hair at the back sticks up in awkward directions when it should usually be flat. Does anyone have any suggestions to fix this?

I am a licensed hairdresser. Well, if you don't like your hair out of place when u wake up then I would say wash it, then style it the way u want it, also u can use gel to control your fly away hair look.

A hat. honestly don't stress about it.
If you are going to be in a place where hats are inappropriate than try spraying your hair with water and spritzing in some leave in conditioner.

I have that happen too. Either use gel for now and grow it longer so it won't happen or cut it off often/more frequent haircuts.

how come nobody told you to just messup your whole head with texture cream? it's very stylsh and won't matter if the back sticks up. happy new year!

my trimmer is set to 3/8 of an inch.
try cutting it shorter.
