work out for a longer time ie. 45 minutes or more at a lower heart rate than aerobic exercise. For aerobic you want 80-90% of you max heart rate. For weight loss you want 70-80% of your max heart rate.

The fastest way to lose weight is to burn off muscle (which I don't recommend) which can be accomplished by doing high-intensity cardio on an empty stomach. But, I'm sure you'd rather lose fat, so do one or both of the following:
1. Weight train. Gaining muscle helps the body burn fat, as muscle is metabolically more expensive (calorically) to maintain than fat. You'll lose inches more than pounds, but the result will be the same. You'll be thinner, and you'll have more energy.
2. Low impact aerobics. I prefer brisk walking/jogging to any other form of exercise because of the control it allows over your heart rate. Do this quick calculation to figure out your fat burning range: Take the number 220 and subtract your age. Take that number and multiply it by .65 and .75. Keep your heart rate between the two and you'll maximize fat loss while minimizing muscle loss. Also, if you're going to do aerobics, do it first thing in the morning on an empty stomach to force your body to burn fat for energy.
Oh, and whatever you do, don't work out for more than 45-60 minutes at a time. More than that and your body will start eating up your muscles for energy (catabolism). I lost 105 pounds in 6 months. Here is how I did it.
1. Every morning get up and walk for 45 minutes. You can start with less time, but you want to get up to 45 minutes, and it must be fast walk. You want your heart rate to go up. It must be in the morning, it kick starts your metabolism.
2. I cut out Red Meat, and fatty foods. Boneless skinnless chicken breast, baked, or grilled, rice and vegetables (steamed).
3. Eat half. Just eat half of what you normally eat. Put 1/2 on your plate, and put the rest away. Cook less. When you go to fast food, get salads only. Or grilled chicken. No fries, only diet soda. Or water.
It will work, once you get into a routine, you will get hooked on the results, and you will keep the routine. It has been over a year for me.

whatever makes you feel good because that's a plan you can stick with.
you could have the best, most advanced workout in the history of time but honestly, if you'd rather poke out your eyes than do it how long will you be able to stick with it? if taking a nice long walk or playing soccer or pickup football is fun for you then start there and in time you'll find yourself wanting to move more

Really anything that you enjoy that you will stick to on a regular basis. It can be sports or working out at the gym or walking on the street or classes of some kind. As long as you do it regularly it is good.
