Not that I'm scared, but I have an extreme case of shyness; My body literally sweats if Im forced to make a speech.

If you catch her looking at you out of the corner of their eye, smile and give a small polite wave. If she turns and waves back, she likes you but she is a bit shy. Talk to her a few more times so she can learn that you like her too but she doesn't feel pressured. Talk to her a couple of more times, then ask for her number.
If you are talking about something and then after she finishes talking with you pretend to look at a book or your watch, in otherwords pretend you are not scoping her out. While she is walking away, if she turns her head and looks over her shoulder back at you, then she definitely likes you. Ask for her phone number next time you meet. Definite green light.
Those are two subtle ways. Otherwise, just ask for her number, she'll either give it to you or she won't. If she won't because she's shy, don't worry, she'll be back. If you ask twice and she says no twice move on, you know the answer.

No, it doesn't necessarily mean she's single and likes you. We can be devious and give you an abstract number. But, in our defense, it's usually because we don't want to hurt your feelings (to your face). A good way to know if a girl likes you is the next time you see her, watch her eyes to see if they flirt with you and if she smiles at you alot. Another good tell is to see if she remembers or brings up things from your previous conversation. Watch her body language: is she open and receptive? or stand-offish and bored? You could always have a girl friend ask her opinion of you, if you can't figure it out for yourself. Just a few tips ..... Do you mean, "If you ask for her number and she tells you, does that mean she's single and she likes you?" No, not exactly. That doesn't mean she's always single. And if she gives you her number, she likes you enough to be given her number to you. But, that doesn't mean she likes you more than a friend. As time and your friendship with her progresses, it will tell you her feeling for you.

Well, I wouldn't go up to the guy I liked and ask for his number, I'd ask his best friend, or one of my friends who would know it.
Probably though if that has happened to you she does like you, and is single, or about to be.
