I have been to federal prison twice and when inmates are close to the end of their sentence they are mandated to take a class called pre release which the stipulations of our release due to our status a convicted felons is thourly explained. We have to sign an acknowledgment form. From what was explained to us a firearm is anything with a trigger mechanisim or protrudes. It can be a bb gun, flare gun, stun gun mase, or a sling shot. The reason I am asking is I messed up my life at a young age and now that I am older and drug free I would love an opportunity to be given to me like what was given to THE DOG. I was raised being taught all the right morals and ethics exept the drugs made me ignore what I was taught all my life. I always heard that it takes a criminal to catch a criminal. I have wanted to be a police officer since I was seven and knowing what I know now has to be a great plus. If The dog can do it on national tv why can't I? Is DOG within the means of federal law?

bounty hunters are hired. they typically need a license. if you can get this, you may be able to work as a bounty hunter. but 2 shows about bounty hunters would probably be too much so that probably won't work out for you

Yes he is allowed to carry mace as anyone else is able to....there are grades to mace all the way up to L/E grade mace. What he carries is the size that correctional officers use however isnt the same strength. As being a Loss prevention officer in FLA I can tell you that I am allowed to carry my handcuffs and mace as a tool as a police officer or federal security officer would. A bounty hunter , Depending on the state, is allowed to be armed and equipped according to the states laws. Dog CHOOSES NOT to use firearms. However most reasonable BH's do carry and are very proffesional. By law they can enter a domicile with or without consent if they have reasonable belief that a fugitive is inside. They are also open to civil lawsuits if they are wrong ;) Hope this sheds some light.

Dog isn't a bounty hunter on paper. His son owns and operates one of the bail bond shops, his wife the other. He's not legal to be a bail bondsman because he's a convicted felon.

Felons are forbidden by federal law of owning or possessing a firearm. Mace does not fall under that category.

If you truly want to pursue a career in LE, you can go back to court and ask that your felony record be expunged. As you state you have been to federal prison twice, you never know, they are supposed to look at the changes a person has made in their lives after the incarceration to decide if the record expungement is for the good of the people. The prosecutor has to agree to let it be expunged as well.

I am not sure exactly what you are getting at here.

Ihear what you are saying those it is not really an issue of weather or not it is a firearm, what what class of weapon it is.

But even normal unconvicted law abiding citizens are supposed to have concealed weapons permit to carry mace. Mace is considered on the same level a weapon as a firearm. Obviously the destructive force of mace is much easier regulated versus that of a gun. For instance mace is an effetive deterent, which is much easier to explain in court versus the discharge of a firearm, because firearms have much more potential to cause serious damage and destroy life. It is much more reasonable to explain "this person was behaving hostile towards me and those around him, I feared he might injure one of these people so I subdued him with mace in order to prevent him from doing so." Versus "yeh the fuqer was acting crazy and I shot him!"

When in a physical confrontation the moment you pick up any object it becomes a weapon. So weather or not a felon can carry mace I dont really know, but mace is one of those gray areas, it seems; Ladys frequently carry mace in thier purse and get away with it.

Here in Canada, mace or pepper spray and slingshots are not considered firearms. They can be considered weapons if they are used as such (just like pretty much any object). Citizens are allowed to carry "bear/dog" pepper spray here for protection. It is only considered a weapon if used on a person. I don't think you have a even a glimmer of hope of being a police officer, but bounty hunting, I don't know.

He is not carrying mace or just regular pepper spray. He is carrying OC spray. Heck of a lot different than what you would buy in the store.

Talk to a police officer and ask him what exactly is considered a firearm in your state. Then ask him if he knows if bounty hunting is actually legal in that state or not. It might be legal in a different name like bond enforcer or something like that.

Good luck with it all...

"If a state law gives people more rights than a federal law, the state law is legally supposed to prevail. This means state law will always supersede federal law when the person in question stands to gain more from the state law, right?

Wrong. The law that applies to situations where state and federal laws disagree is called the supremacy clause, which is part of article VI of the Constitution. The supremacy clause contains what's known as the doctrine of pre-emption, which says that the federal government wins in the case of conflicting legislation. Basically, if a federal and state law contradict, then when you're in the state you can follow the state law, but the feds can decide to stop you. When there is a conflict between a state law and federal law, it is the federal law that prevails. For example, if a federal regulation prohibits the use of medical marijuana, but a state regulation allows it, the federal law prevails."

Good for you! It is never too late to change your life and make dreams come true!
In answer to your question, what Dog carries is actually pepper spray. It is chemically different from mace and is perfectly legal for anyone to carry in most states. I live in CA and anyone over 18 can buy and carry pepper spray regardless of their record.
Check with your state or any legitimate gun dealer and they can tell you what your state law is regarding the purchase and possession of pepper spray.
Best of luck to you and stay strong!
