You’ve got the right idea.

The test CD or DVD should be well recorded and something you’re familiar with.

Might even make you own disc that includes voices or instruments you like and intend to play on the speakers when you get them home.

Make sure all sound enhancers and equalizers are off and the speakers under evaluation are played at the same volume.

There are test discs made by the magazines Stereophile, Sound and Vision, and various other organizations.

The best test music is something you enjoy. Don’t limit yourself to big box stores in your neighborhood, seek out audio boutiques. You may spend the same or less and get a far superior speaker in a small audio store.
