This is what I found Fifty-eight (58) dB(A) during nighttime hours. I have a dog and she barks when I am not home. I want to make sure I am not going to get fined or something for my dog barking. I was really looking for someone that can tell me what I can compare to 58 dB(A). I don't know what I will do with her if I get fined. When I am here she never barks.

Our municipal noise by-law says that it can't be noise that disturbs other inhabitants. The level of noise is not given, it is basically a subjective thing. You may have a neighbour that doesn't care about the barking and one that does, it doesn't matter how loud the dog is.

Our city does not use a decibel meter to determine noise level. Basically if the noise you are creating is disturbing the public, then you are in violation. Certain noises are allowed during certain times of the days and not during other times of the days. An example is trash trucks dumping dumpsters in a commercial zone that is next to a residential zone. They cannot dump between 23:00 hours and 07:00 hours or they get a ticket. Certain automotive shops cannot operate on Sundays until 13:00 hours. If your dog is barking when you are not home, it could be disturbing a neighbor and thus you might be in violation of a noise ordinance.

you can get a dB meter from radio shack, another thing you need to pay attention to is the distance at which that dB has to be observed. as you get closer or farther away dB will increase or decrease. It should say something to the effect of 58 dB at 100 feet or 30 feet.....some distance.

You could also crate train your dog, and insulate the crate, if you increadibly desperate. Dogs are den dwelling animals to begin with so the crate theoretically does not bother them, as a nice dark place for them to rest.

Godspeed.

A dog cannot bark to the level of 58 decibels, however it is probably in violation of a nuisance ordinance depending on where you live!!
