because people are wicked and they worship other gods made by human.way back in old testament time.God delivered the Israelites from Egypt and while in their way to the promise land He reminded the people that they would be a great nation if they loved and worship Him only and obeyed His Laws.but the Israelites were impatient.while Moses went to Mt. Sanai to receive the Tablets(10 commandments)these people became corrupt and have made themselves a calf to worship.
in our generation most people are too busy for something and forget about God.others worship their money.Jesus said you can't serve two masters at thesame time.Either you worship God or mammoth.
God is a Spirit and He is seeking those who worship Him in Spirit and in Truth.most people worship God with their mouth and not their hearts because they have wandered and drifted away from the Truth.God Bless!
May you have a wonderful New Year!

The word "jealous" is difficult to understand.
Why the Creator of all words can be jealous like an egoistic man?
If we allow anything to be worshipped at the station of the One True God, our mind will be divided instead of concentrating on learning and applying His divine education. Lack of divine education is most harmful to the our soul.

personally, i think this christian god is personified as someone very greedy and rambunctious. I don't think he really IS that way, but the way the bible words it, it definitely makes him look that way... When I was a christian, i always heard "you need to fear God..." and i just never could feel that way. I always thought he was a kind god, loving and caring, not at all mean, jealous, and hateful towards the unconventional crew... I think Christians need to look at other facts beyond the bible before they start telling what gods personality is...

Why do some people still sacrifice their children to strange gods? Millions of babies have been violently sacrifice to the strange god of "pro-choice". Many other abominations and strange gods are going to bring destruction to our nation, and our people don't see it coming.
Exodus 20: 5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;

It is true, The Bible goes on in that same verse in exodus to say "you shall have no other Gods before me." this is the second of the Ten Commandments. God is the creator, he gave us the breath in our lungs and a beating heart, it seems reasonable enough to me to conclude that he deserves our praise.

Many just don't know. Others don't forget, they just reject God completely. And then there are those who call themselves Christians but don't know God and His goodness well enough to give Him the praise that belongs to Him.

because it's worth forgetting?
My wife isn't jealous. She doesn't need to be because she knows I am faithful to her and she's faithful to me. There's trust there.
So does that mean that God doesn't trust us? Of course he doesn't. That's why he slaughters people madly throughout the Old Testament for stupid things, like taking a census or refusing to have sex with your brother's wife.

God desires our worship; however, we must refrain from judging how others choose to do so.

we didn't forget the line. We just think it's pretty clear evidence that it was written by men who were trying to control the masses through fear of an all powerful being. And- every time there was a flood or pestilence, they could point to their 'god' and say "See... look what he did since you didn't pray to him (and follow me)".
