Most websites are contributed to by other researchers. The info is only as good as the researcher and should ALWAYS be double checked and documented before taken as true and accurate. I just received my new issue of Family Tree Magazine and they list 101 Best Websites. Worth picking up a copy.

Ancestry.com has free trials all the time.
Unfortunately, you douing these things in-depth and accurately requires a lot of research. The LDS site may be helpful, but as someone who has a serious genealogy hobby, I can truthfully tell you that their data is full of errors.
Try posting on the rootsweb site for the county your great-grandparents lived in after you have searched the site for their surname yourself.

You could start at the Latter Day Saints genealogy search page
http://www.familysearch.org/
They have a pretty exhaustive set of family history records.

, also, try your local library geneaology section and the libraries of towns where you know your family has lived. many families have family histories on file there.
contact by mail or in person, your cousins and family members who may have information as well, and interesting stories to tell about them. there are often clues in such info that can lead to wonderful discoveries. Good luck!

Go to your local library and look at microfiche or find out where your local Family History Research center is. The morman church is usually good for that.

Depending on the type of information that you "need", would be where you would look.
Do you have names? approximate dates of birth and death?
Try one of the free Genealogy websites like:

doing all of the searching online wont cost you a penny, its the getting copies of documents that will cost you. here are some great sites that helped me. i also just stumbled upon Ted site, which will tell you how to go about your searches (with great tips).
cindi's list is the best one for searching databases, passenger lists, etc. THOUSANDS of sites (free stuff) on her site.
also, take your time, back them, they may have spelled some of your last names different (happened to me).

Try genealogy sites. The Mormons website can be of great help. (Your family did not have to be Mormon to be listed.) It has links to marriage records, death, prison inmate, and Ellis Island records. Happy hunting!
