I like the 1963 ProtoType and the
Indy Pace car for that year 64 1/2

On March 9, 1964 the first Mustang rolled off of the assembly line

The Ford Mustangs built between March 1964 and August 17, 1964, are known as1964 1/2 Mustangs. Those that were built after August 17, 1964, are known as late 1965 Mustangs.

All 64 1/2's where registered as 1965 Models...

The first production Mustang rolled off the assembly line in Dearborn, Michigan on 9 March 1964, and was introduced to the public at the New York World's Fair on 17 April 1964, and via all three American television networks on 19 April.

Just to add something to the first poster the tail lights were also different on the 641/2 vs the actual 65 mustang.

the date of manufacture is found in the motor vin. it gives only the year. since the year youy are looking for is 64, you can be fairly sure it was manufactured in 1964and not late 63 since it didn't come out until the second half of the model year, probably between march and august. the door plate may give you the exact month if it's still intact. the correct year is really 64 1/2 since it wasn't introduce until spring of 1964. it had a number of mechanical problems which were fixed in the 65's.
