It takes about 400 calories a day to maintain the weight of a typical adult cat.

If your elderly cat is dropping weight fast, it is likely either diabetes type 2 or "fatty liver" (complications from existing weight loss). See your vet.

Each cat is different, in that calories in and energy out need to balance in order to maintain healthy weight. Just like people.

It would depend on the cat. What stage of life, build, sex, energy level........MANY factors!!!

If he is dying, why are you concerned about the number of calories he is taking in??????
