Remodeling a small section of house, and just wondering if it is worth the extra 3-4 thousand dollars in the long run. I dont live in a booming real estate market either.

No. Hardwood floors add more value. Much more. If you are planning on selling your home down the line, wood floors that are cheap or in bad condition will knock from 5 to 10 thousand dollars off the price offered.... So especially if you're not in a booming real estate market, the hardwood floors become a major selling factor when compared to what is out there...

When selling a home, you can expect to recuperate the cost plus approximately 35 to 55% of your investment in hardwood floors

No, laminate flooring does not add as much value. Laminate flooring tends to wear out fast and lose its appearance. It is a short term type of flooring good for a quick sale but not over the long term It is a good flooring but not the same. I do have some laminate in my house and it serves its purpose. Just not a long term investment. VCT tiles would be better.

Another negative about laminate, is it can not get wet.
The particle substrate absorbs all moisture. Thus it should be not used in bath or laundry rooms or snow country

Hardwood flooring is real, it lasts for centuries if maintained but is expensive. I can tell the difference by feel and appearance when I enter a room.

A compromise might be a hardwood veneer on a composite substrate. This is sold at most home centers and is what you might be talking about to begin with. The moisture problem is true here also.

Whatever you decide on have fun and enjoy it.

well dont do it for the value, do it for yourself. Solid hardwood floors have a more solid feel and will last an eternity. Wood laminates feel like laminates and certainly do not add as much value. However, you live in your house so you should do what you can afford and like. If it adds value, then that is great. Having solid hardwood floors would certainly add value, but the real value is what you want. Your home is primarily a home, and secondarily an investment so think of it that way.

It might be worth it, depending on what you're looking to do. If you want a nice new floor, laminate is fine, but if you're looking to add value you should go with hardwood. You get what you put in. A potential home buyer will likely want to tear up the laminate, whereas hardwood is a major selling point.

while laminate is a great durable floor, great for heavy traffic and made for floors with slight inperfection on the sub-floor, It adds no additional value to your home.
Wood floors do add value, and look great, however they are easier to scratch, but can be sanded and refinished many times without the cost of replacing. The better choice would be to consider your lifestyle and how long you will be living in this house. That how I would determine if the increase in value is worth it or not.
