My girlfriend and I have been dating for about 5 months. We are older, in our 40's, and should be past playing games. She apparently, according to her parents, has had a problem in the past being a "shopaholic" (in this case, fashion jewelry, clothes in her closet that still have the tags on them she has not worn yet). We finally got to a point where I felt it was time for a nice piece of jewelry, so I picked out with her a pair of earrings in her birth stone. They were at a price I could afford.

When we finally got back to her home, she felt guilty, took her mother aside, and they both came back advising me to take the earrings back, her father chiming in the background "she has enough jewelry" (that's not the point, it was a step of greater commitment and love).
Should I feel insulted, or roll with the apparent "shopaholic" problem?

I would feel insulted it doesn't matter how much jewelry she has this was a gift to her to show you how much you care about her. Besides she is at the age, and should have been for a long time, where she does not need her parents input on things like that.

Feel insulted! ask her where she feels you are in your relationship, maybe she doesn't think you're at the jewelry stage, if she maintains that she's just a shopaholic with too much junk, explain that you just wanted to give her something to symbolize your relationship and it doesn't matter if she has enough jewelry.

Man, you are treating in a thin ice. By giving her jewelry, you might just open the floodgates for this gold digger. Imagine give a recovering alcoholic a simple beer or to a bar????? Do not give her anything with value, she might think, if this loser gave me this what else I can get from this idiot???? Can he buy me more things???? How can I roll this loser??? You should have know this coming a mile away from your man in you age.

That is a tough one. I believe though, because You bought them for her, she didn't buy them herself, there shouldn't be a cause for a problem. Just make sure if you keep her around, you guard your check book and savings account!

Happy New Year! :)

RUN. She'll ruin your credit and suck your savings dry. Tell her to call you when she overcomes her addictions. If she's in her 40's wtf are her parents doing? Does she still live with them because she's so financially irresponsible she can't pay rent? RUN. 5 months is enough time to learn she has major problems.
