In movies and stuff, police people open peoples cars and show them their badge and say "LAPD, i need your car!" and stuff like that. Can they really jack your transportation ride if they need it? Does it go against any laws? Just wondering.

It can and it is legal, but the reality is that it will happen so rarely, that you'll probably never even know someone it has happened to. WHY? Because if a cop demands your car and then crashes it or in any other way damages it, the state has to replace it.

The most likely time it would happen is if a police was alone, after a vehicale with a hostage or kidnap victim in it and knew that if he waited for back up to get him or get to the car, the people may be dead or get away and not be able to find and rescue the victim.

They are not going to take your car during an every day type of chase. If you want to really know what the law is in your area, go to your local police station and ask to speak to their public relations officer, that individual can tell you more about the law and if it's ever occurred in your area where a cop demanded a citizens car after his or her's broke down or was wrecked during a chance.

I commandeered a boat once to help save a child from drowning but never a car. It is only a criminal offense to take someone's car (or boat) if the intent is there to steal it. The officer would have to have a verrrrrrrry good reason to do so, however. It would be pretty rare for an officer to be stuck somewhere without wheels.

There was a Smart fortwo police car in Sydney, Australia. Also a Lamborghini police car in Italy. So any car can be used by the police.

I am not for sure, but a long time ago I heard it is legal only in a true emergency and the police dept is responsible for any damage that occurs.

Yes, but most departments will have policies against actually doing it.

Under certain conditions, they can 'comandeer' any of your possessions. To me, I consider this legalized stealing, and if they trash what they take, tough luck for you.
