That's not a dumb question, it's actually a good one! Taking a guess, I would have to say that if you are watching a DVD and you want to view the subtitles you would have to activate the subtitles via the DVD player you are using. I don't think the DVD uses the same encoded signal that the cable stations use to send the subtitles to your TV tuner. Hey, don't be so down on yourself. Very few people learn anything without asking questions! Happy New Year, R!!

It might depend on your tv.
I have a Sony TV, DVD player and receiver. They all work in conjunction. If I click the subtitle button on my tv remote, it will display subtitles in english, spanish, or french...but only if the dvd or program has the subtitles recorded.

It's possible for me to view subtitles without having to interrupt the movie and go the main menu, audio set-up, etc. I don't know if it works for all tv/dvd player combinations.

I might if the DVD has the option for another language most have it so try the DVD menu.

But if is a Tv show try the close caption some shows have a subtitle option most in spanish channel have now, so just try it.

Good Luck.

Well it depends on a few things:
1. the producer of the program has to actually have captions in the program. They might, they might not.

2. IF they have captions, they might be in English, they more likely will be in the native language of the program.

So it depends...the guys who made the program actually pay someone (captionmax and others) to add captions. Sometimes the national networks will do that, but typically it's the production company.

So turn them on and see what you get. Most of the movies on AMC in the US don't have captions. i.e. AMC is too cheap to get the captions so they don't have them on a lot of movies.

it largely depends on the material being transmitted-if it is a foreign film and has English subtitles then when you press the subs button English will appear because it is encrypted into the transmission.
