I usually say its God's will when its something that YOU think that God would have given you. No one else can say what you think God's will is. You usually have a feeling in your heart that, it is a good feeling to do that will. It urges you to do the right thing thus the Holy Spirit.

At Matthew 17: 5 While he was yet speaking, look! a bright cloud overshadowed them, and, look! a voice out of the cloud, saying: “This is my Son, the beloved, whom I have approved; listen to him.
I'm soory this answer might not be what you are looking for, but to fully understand what and when something is God's will, would take effort on the part of the asker to look at the Bible, and try to understand the 'mind of God' as it is revealed on the scripture.

If it happens it is God's will. EVERYTHING happens for a reason. It is all part of his plan. One thing happening or not happening can change everything in the future. My mother's mom died when my mother was 2. It's very sad, but if it weren't for her dying, I wouldn't be here, much less my 2 year old little girl. Something good always comes out of whatever happens.

Hmm, to know what is God's will we should study the Sacred scriptures of the religions of those people.. who claim that their scriptures are the word of GOD. put all the scriptures on the test and i hope you'll find a true one. God looks in to the people's heart and give guidance only to those who mkay he knows are seeking the truth. I am a Muslim and A Student of comparative religions.. and i have studied almost all the major religions of the world and the best religion i found is "ISLAM".
Islam is an arabic word and comes from the root word "salm" and "silm" which means peace and submitting one's will to almighty God, respectively. so Islam means to acquire peace by submitting your will to Allah, the Almighty God.
A person who acquires peace by submitting his/her will to Allah, Almighty God, in arabic is Called as a MUSLIM.
And the Holy Qur'an is the only book which is error free and corruption free. it remained pure for 1400years. And there is not a single contradiction or conciliation in The Holy Qur'an. If Anyone can prove to me even a single verse or teaching of the Holy Quran or Sahih Hadith(Sayings and doings of prophet Muhammad (pbuh) preserved in written form) which is against Manity as a Whole. i will give up this religion!!! u can contact me for any information regarding religions at cyborrg88@hotmail.com

One way for Christians is to hear the word.
The divinely inspired scriptures have many instructions on what to do and what not to do. There are many places where it tells you what the will of God is concerning us.Outside of that I think there is freedom in Christ that is allowed us to fulfill what is clear in the word and comes from the guidance of the Holy Spirit, which comes and takes up residence with a blessed believer, and causes him to love Gods will and want to do it
For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication:
4 That every one of you should know how to possess his vessel in sanctification and honour;
5 Not in the lust of concupiscence, even as the Gentiles which know not God:
6 That no man go beyond and defraud his brother in any matter: because that the Lord is the avenger of all such, as we also have forewarned you and testified.
7 For God hath not called us unto uncleanness, but unto holiness.
8 He therefore that despiseth, despiseth not man, but God, who hath also given unto us his holy Spirit.
9 But as touching brotherly love ye need not that I write unto you: for ye yourselves are taught of God to love one another.

The only way TO KNOW absolutely is the Bible. God's Word to all persons.
The reason the Bible is, is because God wrote it. Hence the words "God's Word" is.
