I use www.irishgenealogy.ie

They have:

32 County Commissioned Births & Baptismal Research

IFHF Central Signposting Index (3,198,125 Records) - Records from 11 Counties (Armagh, Cavan, Derry, Donegal, Fermanagh, Leitrim, Limerick, Mayo, Sligo, Tyrone & Wexford)

Ireland's Gravestone Index (389,501 Records) - Gravestone Inscriptions from 10 Counties (Antrim, Armagh, Derry, Donegal, Down, Dublin, Fermanagh, Louth, Monaghan, & Tyrone)

Ireland's Memorial Records - World War 1 (1914-1918) Records compiled by the Committee of the Irish National War Memorial and recording the names and year of death of the 49,400 Irishmen who died in the Great War.

Householder's Records

Ulster Covenant Search - The archive of the Ulster Unionist Council, held by the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI), contains just under half a million original signatures and addresses of the men who, on 28 September 1912, signed the Ulster Covenant, and of the women who signed the parallel Declaration. In total, the Covenant was signed by 237,368 men, and the Declaration by 234,046 women.

Freeholders' Records - Freeholders' records are lists of people entitled to vote, or of people who voted, at elections. A freeholder was a man who owned his land outright (in fee) or who held it by lease which could be for one or more lives.

There are also various county sites run by volunteers available by doing individual searches, siuch as www.lalley.com or www.raymondscountydownwebsite.com

You could also try the The LEITRIM-ROSCOMMON Elphin Census Search Page (Synge Census - 1749)

www.irelandoldnews.com has obit indexes gathered from a variety of sources for the Irish born who died elsewhere

Boston College also has the "missing friends" ads placed by the Irish in Boston at www.infowanted.bc.edu

Irish genealogy is not online like Scottish and English records. Hopefully, that might change in the near future. The records are also not that extensive. There was a really large fire in the 1920s that destroyed pretty much everything of use to the family historian - most censuses and parish records went up in flames for good.

What little there is is best seen on the Mormon site at familysearch.org or by Googling for a specific area of Ireland or following links from a site such as cyndislist.com. If you have any Irish ancestry at all then you'll have to prepare yourself for the fact that you will hit a very big brick wall sometime soon.

You may find someone else is researching the same names as yourself and a good site to look at is www.familysearch.org.

There are several databases to search for free there.

You can also search the Family History Library Catalogue that lists all the resources the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have available that may help further your research. You can view records at a local Family History Center use of which is free. Location of these can also be found on the website.

If you have to order in a film or fiche you may have to pay a nominal fee but it may be that they have them in the Centre in which there is no charge.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day saints is an excellent resource, widely used.

You can also download, again free, a software programme on which you can record you research.

Hope this is helpful and good luck.

Most birth and death records for Ireland North and South are readily available pre 1921. I go to my local family history centre run by the Mormans. They also do the LDS website.

If your ancestors are from Donegal here is an excellent website http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~donegal/.

Also try Mormon Family search as this is good also.

For your Scottish ancestors try Scotlands people, this gave me a good starting point.

Mental Mickey has hit the nail on the head. It was the IRA's dirty deed that destroyed most of the pre-20's Irish records, as I have found to my disappointment.
