MPEG4 is a video codec. MPEG4-SP stands for MPEG4 simple profile; it usually refers to MPEG-4 , Part 2.
However, there is new video codec, MPEG-4, part 10, also known as AVC or H.264. Ipods use the latter.
MP4 is a file format for both audio and video files.
So, read all the specs carefully:
What files formats does it support? (ex. avi, wmv, mp4)
What codecs does it support? (ex. mpeg2, mpeg4, avc, wmv9, etc..)
